Jean Dawson - Glimmer of God
76

A truly refreshing album, these tracks show Jean Dawson’s expansive range of sounds. It’s really cool to see an artist use their influences to create something truly their own. I can hear so many other artists whose music I love in these tunes but this still sounds new and can stand on it’s on. The way some of these songs switch up direction is so fun, all of a sudden you are on a different vibe but it all fits so smoothly. There were some songs that just faded to the ... read more

Charli xcx - Brat and it's completely different but also still brat

This album is completely different and still brat. Major respect to Charli XCX for actually remixing all of the songs and basically remaking them as a collaboration between her and the feature. This also has to be one of the best feature line ups I’ve seen. You’ve got different genres, ages, and levels of notoriety all on the same album perfectly fit in and not feeling forced at all. The features are allowed to shine and add their own experience with the theme of the track. ... read more

Mustafa - Dunya

Just a collection of beautiful, almost lullaby like songs that share the same melodic tendencies. It has a really cool blend of modern day r&b techniques along with instruments like the lute which really shined on Name of God. Mustafa has a talent for weaving in age old questions of life with everyday personal problems in such a gentle manner. Truly poetry in song form, tracks that keep you pondering and feeling. I was a bit geeked to realize that the backing vocals on some of these tracks ... read more

Jamie xx - In Waves

Overall the whole project was great, nothing was bad but also nothing was amazing to me. It has a very hopeful feeling that it carries throughout with different messaging about life and upbeat beats. Not all of the messaging connected for me and I’m unsure if that’s because it felt a little elementary or just because this isn’t a genre I always enjoy. It still was a really cool journey and felt very rooted in English EDM. I’ve never listened to any Jamie xx before but I ... read more

Moses Sumney - Sophcore

Just a groovy and mellow collection of tunes. It's all very cohesive with each song matching the curated vibe perfectly. It's truly the harmonies that make this EP, each part of the song moves together smoothly throughout the swells and dips.
Standouts: Gold Coast, Hey Girl

Fontaines D.C. - Romance

I really respect how fitting the first and last tracks were. The first song of the album being the title track just makes sense. It had an entrance feel to it, complete with sweeping instrumentals that set the scene. The last track was both a celebration of their current place in life but also everything that has been lost and gained to get there. With those being the bookends, every other track felt like I just appeared in it. There was little build up or fade out and more so just good music. ... read more

Suki Waterhouse - Memoir of a Sparklemuffin
67

Once I get past the album's name the contents are pretty decent. Side note, I didn’t realize Sparklemuffin was referring to a spider species and thought it was a cringy pet name. Memoir of a Sparklemuffin is a laidback cool album, there is a casualness to all of the songs that feels like Suki Waterhouse is just singing for herself. You get lulled into her world filled with past and present relationships, moments of feigned apathy and a look into someone trying to stay true to ... read more

This showed off a wide range of what Megan can do but the entire range didn't work for me. I think Megan was at her best on it when tamping into her anger or doing her hot girl songs. The ones I wasn't as much a fan of was where I felt a disconnect between the beat and her flow. I also understand this was very much an album for her hometown from the features to the beats, since I don't have that background I didn't connect as much with those aspects.
Standouts: Otaku Hot ... read more

Magdalena Bay - Imaginal Disk

I fear I am addicted, I haven't been able to stop listening to this album since I first heard it and when I'm not listening to it I am thinking about listening to it. Even listening to other music, it pales in comparison and I want to listen to this album again.

I first want to say how much I love the album cover, it's so spot on like it perfectly sets the tone for what the theming of the album is. What it’s going to sound and feel like as well as just being an amazing ... read more

Peggy Gou - I Hear You

This album just wasn't really for me, not bad but just nothing special. It felt like it had a big 90's influence and was a little ambient in its production which was cool but could become background music. None of the more chill electronic beats fully worked, like there was some interesting songs just not fully developed.

ROLE MODEL - Kansas Anymore
65

Simple and sweet filled with moving tunes and foot-tapping ditties.
Standouts: writing's on the wall, deeply still in love, compromise

Remi Wolf - Big Ideas
70

I can get lost in this project a bit since the songs all have very similar vibes with a lot going on. The lyrics do pull it back together using that Remi flair, the wacky lil sparkle that comes from how the lyrics match the melody. It really is refreshing to see that a lot of projects this year are bringing back to the guitar solo to pop music.
Standouts: soup, toro, kangaroo, when I thought of you

FousheƩ - Pointy Heights
82

That album was just super enjoyable. Fousheé did a great job of weaving in her heritage and making use of those Caribbean influences while also still offering us new and now sounds. The project had a nice flow to it with interesting production choices and ear-catching guitar solos. I will definitely have this on repeat along with Bird's Eye.
Standouts: loversland, war, still around

Still Woozy - Loveseat
68

Get's a bit repetitive in certain sections because it's so classic still woozy . This project was basically his sweet spot. Overall a very comforting and groovy album but not one I can really listen to all the way through.
Standouts: shit don't change, frida kahlo, houston

beabadoobee - This Is How Tomorrow Moves
70

Nice and simple, with a calm introspective throughline. Some of the songs tend to blend together but there are still some interesting moments and it's just a vibe.
Standout: real man

Death Grips - No Love Deep Web
NR

Okay, so I have this poster on my wall that I got from an artist and it’s a bunch of different albums drawn in their art style. I’ve had this poster for about 3 years now and there has only been one album cover on it that I haven’t been able to identify. I can’t say I’ve tried that hard other than googling it but there wasn’t a lot to go on because it was pretty much just a tiled floor. I know of Death Grips but have only heard some singles off of The Money ... read more

Coco & Clair Clair - Girl

These two have created a niche that works for them. Sometimes I like it and sometimes it's just not what I'm feeling. The Our House cover was truly unexpected but was a welcome addition. It just goes to show that good writing can work with any style of music as long as it’s well-produced. No standouts for this album just across the board pretty decent.

Towa Bird - American Hero
58

Imma start off with saying that I believe basic gay songs deserve rights too and to me that's a lot of what this album was. Many of these songs felt like anyone could've written them as long as they knew the singer was a lesbian. As far as I can tell Towa seems cooler than what was represented in this album. Like she is a really good guitar player and that just wasn't utilized enough for my liking. It just lacked something special that would really hook me.
Standouts: drain me!, ... read more

For being a dance ep it didn't make me want to dance that much. I could easily imagine hearing HEAT and busy girl out in a club. Most of the songs I feel are better suited to being used in short clips rather than played as a full song. Totally get the carefree and sexy vibe from them.

Toro y Moi - Hole Erth
52

It's hard when you want an album to be better than it is, hearing Tuesday as a single hyped me up for the rest of the album. When I actually listened to it, it felt like I was forcing myself to get into an album that really didn't want me there. There were specific lyrics too that I just really couldn't get past and would snap me out of the song. Particularly the lyric "energy angel," felt out of touch and just wasn't something I could relate to.
Standout: Tuesday
