I was not the biggest fan of The Tortured Poets Department, and really this album has several of the same flaws. But it also manages to improve on certain key elements that I felt held that previous work back, namely a renewed understanding that more is not always more.

For this to be a debut album, Sombr has a very clear vision for what he wants and who he is. This album plays with a sort of swagger and confidence that makes it really impossible to put down once you get going. His lyrics are nothing groundbreaking, but speak very truthfully and succinctly gather together some of the more messy and intangible emotions that come with young love and the first real tastes of heartbreak.

There is a sense of coming up a bit short on the record, but I attribute that more to it's brisk runtime than to any fault in the material itself. A shining, glimmering, chaotic collection of some absolute career highs and stunningly few real lows (even the worst track here is still passable). This is Gaga at her most inspired in years, and her joy is infectious. This is the album that we've all been waiting for her to make since Born This Way, and it makes sense why it took so long to get it. This is the work of a season, mature artist who knows exactly who she is and what she wants.
