It's really interesting listening to indie bands that were huge in the early 2000s flail around trying to stay relevant. Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie, The Shins. They all just keep trying to remain relevant, but their time has passed.
This is an album from The Shins. That's about it. It sounds like what you expect The Shins to sound like.
Artists that sound like this are critical darlings right now, but this album just doesn't do much for me. Hop Along has more interesting vocals, Mitski has better music, Angel Olsen better lyrics/emotion, Courtney Barnett is more fun, Waxahatchee has better production. Basically Vagabon is good, but doesn't excel in really anything. I enjoyed the album while listening to it, but after I didn't have much desire to listen to it again.
Radiohead is an interesting band. Every album feels like a reinvention of the Radiohead sound, with them jumping between electronic music, folk, and straightforward rock every few years. If you asked me to pin down what Radiohead sounded like, I would be hard-pressed to describe them. I can describe what their albums sound like, but can not apply a consistent label to the band as whole.
