SOS is best defined by the word “melting pot” to me. Sza’s debut album, Ctrl, was released in 2017 while SOS was released in the last quarter of 2022. After listening to this project, I literally cannot tell you what emotion was evoked by it. There is no song I can tell you I straight up loved nor one that I hated, just a continuous stream of “meh” and “that was okay” for 32 minutes. There are occasional standouts (touch) but it is very clear this is the attempt at finding musical identity (or the label testing what works and what doesnt) for the artists and not technically a focused project.
