This album stripped back the “loveless” aspect of shoegaze a bit to add some punkish, poppish vocals and sound palettes.
As somebody who wasn’t impressed by “spooky” as much, it was a welcome change of pace and reminded me of Curve’s “Doppelgänger” with the vibrance and energy added to the base shoegaze sound.
I think more shoegaze albums could implement these punk-ish, aggressive elements to diverse from the dreamy, ethereal aspects we usually associate the genre with.
