And I thought I could hold a grudge...
Thanks to my pal Bruhman, whom you should follow if you haven't already, I came into this album with some kind of context about the whole disrespecting of Outkast and the southern rap scene that they were representing. The influence that night had on this project in undeniable, and it keeps repeating itself throughout the whole album. To be honest, my least favorite theme of the album.
Another of the themes I was able to identify and were more interesting to me where centered about how the police and society as a whole reacts to people based on appearances which it serves as a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts that pushes those kind of people to the margins of society and, sometimes, the law.
The music is a mix bag for me. The whole album sounds kind of analog, like a pair of crocks, a bit rough on the edges. Is that perhaps the southern style? Like the kind of music a Black Cletus would listen to. And that style helps them to be fun and cartoony like in Wheelz of Steel, and on the other hand grounded and gorgeous like in Babylon.
It's an acquired taste, but I can see myself coming back to this one.
Personal favorite: 13th Floor/Growing Old, this one was pretty endearing, closing the album with a triumph.
