I will always hold a special place in my heart for Blonde Redhead's early music. Released in 1995, making it their first full studio release, Blonde Redhead created one of their many masterpieces. The energetic sound mixed with pure anger and emotion always hits me in an indescribable way. Songs like I Don't Want U and Astro Boy best describe this raw emotion, with Makino and Pace's violent screams and cries on both tracks. On the other hand, songs like Scirui Sciura and Girl Boy ... read more
I didn’t love the singles of this record when they came out. It felt very off to me, especially in comparison to her earlier music, like The Turning Wheel, which I regard as a masterpiece. Despite my doubts, I still listened to it the day it came out. I hadn’t previously liked Alibi, and I thought the mix of rock and pop-soul wouldn’t make much sense. In a way, I thought the album was not going to know what it wanted to be. Upon listening to the singles in context, however, it ... read more
This album was highly anticipated for me. Her two singles, containing Magic I Want U and Flash In The Pan, definitely piqued my interest, as it seemed to be something I’d like more than her earlier music. TWICE REMOVED, Psychoboost, Star People, and Angels In Camo were my least favorite tracks, making it a rough start for me, to say the least. When I got around halfway, however, my opinion began ... read more
Out of all the records in my top 5, I’d describe Cowards as the most underrated. Similarly to getting killed, each song off of Cowards tells a different story (except for Fieldworks I & II, since they’re the same story, just two separate parts). It all starts with a twinkly and minimalist keyboard riff inspired by Philip Glass in the song “Crispy Skin”. The song itself focuses on a story about the commodification of human meat, a world where people are forced to eat ... read more
Ok, I lied. Cowards isn’t the most underrated. RMP’s Self Title is. This record is choc full of absolute masterpieces, combining beautiful lyricism with intricate and fitting instrumentals. The record also goes beyond one genre, with some mimicking folk and others bordering on Midwest emo. I had the pleasure of seeing some of these songs performed live only about a month ago, and let me tell you, they are one of the best live acts right now. With the full band, their songs are ... read more
