(Previous score: 90)
I finally revisited this project after a year or a bit. I have experienced a lot more of life in that time and have properly had the time to dive into the lyrics and intricate details on this project. Long story short: It's phenomenal.
OK Computer is such a coherent, consistent, atmospheric and beautiful album. The writing and production are both perfect. This masterpiece is an achievement of rock as well as my favourite Radiohead album.
Track Review:
Airbag - 9.8
I had a bike accident where I was nearly run over by a car falling off my bike and only inches away from splitting my head and falling into a ditch, relistening to this song after the fact had such a bigger impact for me. I was extremely terrified of death afterwards and biking to work terrified me. I can look back and fully appreciate the amount of LUCK that I am still able to walk and work. "In an interstellar burst, I am back to save the universe."
Paranoid Android - 10
Classic multi-part rock epic. The scope in this song is cartoonish and incredibly catchy. This is an incredible introduction to these insane character views of insanity, violence, politics, etc.
Subterranean Homesick Alien - 9.4
Extremely alien but I feel like I'm at home. Builds an incredible atmosphere. I am fully immersed in this space adventure.
Exit Music (For a Film) - 9.6
That shit turned DIRTY and I LOVED IT. This project continues to be an excellent trip. I also really like Romeo + Juliet.
Let Down - 9.6
Absolutely beautiful and very depressing. It's such an interesting topic to discuss since technology can definitely bring an "emptiness of feeling" however it can also save lives and re-awaken people to look at life at a different angle.
Karma Police - 10
It's Karma Police. Fuck middle management.
Fitter Happier - 7.8
Although I would have preferred a song, these predictions were spot on. This is the world we live in downed to bullet points. Works really well as an interlude to this insane album. "A pig in a cage on antibiotics" still blows my mind.
Electioneering - 8.8
This track is a lot more focused on its political messaging. It stays within the theme of the project however in my opinion something about this track just seems a little more detached from the grand image of the album for me. HOWEVER it is an incredible banger.
Climbing up the Walls - 9.7
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. It's incredible! The lyrical imagery perfectly describes paranoia to an uncomfortable detail. "Climbing up the walls" is such a good lyric to describe the absolute desperation of wanting nobody to peer inside your mind.
No Surprises - 10
I'm actually crying right now writing this. This is a perfect song. It gets across exactly what it wanted to in such an awe-inspiring way.
Lucky - 9.2
Very smart lyrics. Filled with conflicting messages and emotions, Lucky is an incredible take on cynicism.
The Tourist - 9.6
Such a great ending to an iconic album. The detail is immaculate on this track. The chime alone has so many connected meanings to it. Also opening up the song with dogs being able to sense the hidden stress we hold back is actually genius.
