Death Angel - Act III
83

Once again, Death Angel return with another great album after the slight downgrade that was Frolic. This is how you experiment with thrash, feels a lot more focused and interesting than the album that came before it, and it manages to keep my attentiion quite a bit better, especially considering it has a much more reasonable runtime. It's not quite as consistent as, say, The Ultra-Violence, but it's still a great album with a lot of interesting ideas, and a much more mature sound for ... read more

This album was a weird one. After the band gave us Ultra-Violence, honestly one of the best thrash debuts I've heard, they return with a much more experimental album, that is honestly a bit of a downgrade. My main issue is that the album is kinda really all over the place, with some songs being really technical, others maintaining the sound established on the debut, and others leaning to into a much slower, more Black Sabbath style heavy metal vibe, and I feel like the album would have ... read more

What a fucking sick debut this is. The energy of this is fucking insane, with some of the best thrash riffs and solos of the time, you could really tell how fucking eager this bnad was just to play as fast and relentlessly as possible. The vocals here are genuinely insane, might genuinely be some of the highest fucking screams I've ever heard, they're actually sick, catch me completely off guard as well, really unexpected. The production isn't great but honestly the rawnress only ... read more

Vio-Lence - Nothing to Gain

Disappointingly mid compared to the two albums before it, which is honestly a shame. This album is honestly just boring, there's nothing really interesting here at all, and it's honestly completely forgettable. I literally just finished the album and i remember almost none of it already. The riffs were decent, as usual, but what the fuck happened to the production? This was at the very least a decently produced thrash band on their previous albums, but here, the mixing is terrible. ... read more

Another decent album from Vio-Lence. I didn't actually know this while listening to Eternal Nightmare, but Rob Flynn played on that album as well as this one, which I find incredibly interesting. Speaking of, the riffs here are once again just as good as on Eternal Nightmare, and the vocals are honestly better as well. Eternal Nightmare is rated higher however, as I think that album is way more consistent, and I much prefer the energy presented on that album. That being said this is still ... read more

This a really good thrash debut, well produced, fucking phenomenal instrumentally, there are some incredible riffs here and the bass is fucking sick too, Love the energy and the raw speed and aggression of this thing. The vocals certainly are...something, but I don't think that they're that bad. They're very over-the-top, but it kinda fits how frantic this album is, so I don't really mind them. The band seem to wear their influences on their sleeve as well; ironically, I ... read more

This album is not that bad, and the fact that it is rated all the way down with the '90s groove metal album on this iste kinda pisses me off. How is this being compared to fucking Renewal? Or to Cause for Conflict? It may be a bit generic, it may be corny, but it is nowhere near as bad as that. It's also nowhere near their best work either, but it's at least better than Hate Über Alles (or at least I think it is). I see a lot of people complaining that its samey, and that ... read more

Bit of a downgrade but it's still not terrible, I kinda feel the same way about this one as I feel about Hordes of Chaos; they're both decent albums, but as far as this band goes, they're so unimportant in the grand scheme of things. This is probably one of the band's least memorable releases, with some of their most boring, predictable songwriting. That isn't to say it's bad however, I liked more than I didn't and there are some really good songs here with ... read more

Kreator - Gods of Violence

Once again, another really good album from Kreator, not quite on the same level as Enemy or Phantom Antichrist, but at least on the same level as Violent Revolution. I see a lot of people saying this album is corny, and with the chanty choruses and edgy lyrics amd song titles, I do see where they are coming from, but it'sjust so fun. It might be the most fun I've had listening to a moern thrash album in a while actualy, even if other are deifinitely better. I really like the riffs ... read more

Kreator return to what made Enemy of God so good on Phantom Antichrist, with great, soaring melodies hearkening back to melodeath, great riffs, great vocals, incredible performances from the whole band, and great production. It is also just as consistent as Enemy of God, with really none of the tracks losing my interest. I think it's really interesting th\at it was Kreator of all thrash bands to go in this super melody focused direction, when their first few albums were as uncompromising ... read more

This is a bit of weaker album than the two before it, but it's still quite good. My mian issue is its nowhere near as consistent; the two album before this had banger after banger, and there weren't really any songs that lost my interest. That was not the case for this album, with certain songs just seeming kinda like generic thrash that I really have no reason to come back to over other bands doing similar things around the same time. Again, it's not bad, with strong riffs, ... read more

Honestly, I prefer this over Violent Revolution, love the melodeath influences the band really focus on here. Those influences were definitely still present on Violent Revolution, but here the band really bring them to the forefront. I haven't heard of many thrash bands going in this direction tbf, so I do really appreciate and tespect the attempt, and, unlike some of this band's past experiments, the results absolutely paid off, with the band producting one of their best albums, ... read more

A very nice comeback from Kreator, although it certainly isn't their best. After the travesty that was this band's '90s period, Kreator finally retrun with one of the hardest hitting thrash comebacks I've heard yet, with great riffs, great solos, and a much more melodic focus than this band has had in the past. It combines the melody and mood of Coma of Souls, with the speed and aggression of Extreme Aggression to create a very interesting listen, and while I do admit, it ... read more

This is a new one. Never heard of a band experimenting with gothic metal before, and I actually do really respect the attempt here. I see what they were going for, and I appreciate that they tried to go there. But this isn't what I want out of Kreator. There are moments that hit, some really good riffs, really nice piano sections, and great, impactful production, and it's certainly not the worst this band have put out, but for the most part it's just kinda too long, samey, ... read more

Kreator - Outcast

It's definitely the best of Kreator's groove/industrial era, with easily the strongest riffs, best production and most consistent performances. Also, Mille finally sounds decent again, although the constant overuse of effects on his voice can get a bit grating, especially that fucking distortion they keep throwing on over his screams. The whole album has a really dark and moody feel, which I do appreciate tbf, but the main reason I still don't really like this is because this ... read more

Kreator - Cause for Conflict

Another album that I just can not get behind, though admittedly it's definitely better than Renewal. Instrumentally, this album has the exact same issues as Renewal, in that the production isn't very good, and the gorrove/industiral mix Kreator have going on really don't fit the band, like, at all. It is tbf a lot stronger instrumentally than Renewal, and there are some decent riffs on a few of these tracks, but it just doen't balance out how much this really doesn't ... read more

61 is way too fucking high for this shit, what the actual fuck? To think just an album ago, these guys were putting out fucking Coma of Souls and then we get this shit? What a fucking downgrade. The production is terrible here, so much worse than what this band was building themselves up to throughout the '80s, the guitar and drums sound like shit, the industrial elements do not work at all here, either, further proving the point I made with Morbid Angel and Annihilator that ... read more

Kreator - Coma of Souls

This album reminds me a hell of a lot of Seasons in the Abyss with the stylistic changes they made here, and while I do think Seasons is the stronger album, this is still an incredible shift to a more melodic, well produced thrash style, and definitely one of Kreator's best releases so far. I love the riffs here, the vocals are great, this easily has the band's stongest solos, the production is nice, the songwriting is really good here, and it's overall just a really good ... read more

Kreator - Extreme Aggression

Extreme Aggression is ironically probably Kreator's most accessible album yet. That isnt to say it's bad though, with this being one of the best releases from this band yet, with some of the band's best riffs, easily the band's best solos and vocal performance, great production, and great performances from every member of the band. This album in particular really highlights how the band's songwriting has matured in just the 4 years between this and their debut, which is ... read more

Kreator - Terrible Certainty

Another great album from Kreator. It's not quite as good as Pleasure to Kill of course, but it's not far off, my only issue being it's a bit less consistent. The band go in a much mire accessible direction on this album, almost completely abandoning their proto-death metal flare in favour of very clearly Slayer-influenced thrash metal, and honestly the change more or less pays off. There are some great fucking riffs on this album. The production isn't great, it sounds like ... read more
