Slayyyter - WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA
74

I really really really wish that every song was like YES GODDD or BEAT UP CHANEL$, because their rawness really brings out the natural animalism in Slayyyter's excellent vocals and provocative personality. YES GODDD in particular exemplifies the kind of aggression that I think is missing in other tracks (such as GAS STATION); an entire record with that gecs-style violent sonic quality would have gone the one step further that this album needed to turn it from a good project to an ... read more

I just KNOW somebody on here is calling this record dogshit and I want them to know that they are Stupid and an Embarrassment To Their HaplogroupTM

Vylet Pony - NI4NI

Not my typical fare, but my younger brother (we still talk fairly often) is a huge fan of ultrakill, and when he sent me the Fraud trailer, I was immediately hooked on the music. Turns out it's got a not-so-great dubstep-adjacent section about two-thirds of the way through, which kinds dampens the hype for me, but objectively everything about this song slaps fairly fucking hard. It's just GOOD. Good prod, good vocals, good vibes, and a shit ton of energy. Might have to listen to more ... read more

Mastodon - Crack the Skye
100

Crack The Skye is some of the best fucking metal music of all time.

Betcha didn't expect this, huh? A hard left turn from the internet's biggest nobody from hip-hop, R&B, soul, and folk into METAL! And this album is the metallest metal that ever met Al, damn it! Heavy, nasty, violent composition that never abandons its musicality, always stays inventive, showcases wild virtuosity from every member of the band, AND has killer vocals to boot!? Often, it seems to me that decent ... read more

A$AP Rocky - Don't Be Dumb
60

One of those albums where there wasn't much that surprised me. It's pretty much more of the singles, with a handful of slower, more melodic sections to break up the pacing. And the pacing is good, even great -- Rocky and his collaborators know where to put every track here, and the hour-long runtime is not a laborious task like with some other recent hip hop records (not naming names) -- but the project lacks a real high point. It's just consistently decent/good. Helicopter, ... read more

Yuno Miles - ALBUM

its really interesting to me that this album has received this much attention, even in a space this chronically online. it's not... good, at all. it's not trying to be. that goes without saying, of course, but despite how abrasive and plain shitty this record is, the sheer audacity of its subversion has the wannabe music critics of the world drooling and tracing its scent like they're little german kids trying to steal pie left on a windowsill. in a way, yuno miles has captured ... read more

Racing Mount Pleasant - Racing Mount Pleasant

this album fucking floored me.
i don't have much experience with this musical niche. i've never listened to black country, new road, or geese, or squid, or tapir, or lord huron. but the raw emotionality, vulnerability, and surprising virtuosity on display here has thoroughly convinced me that i need to. from the intimate to the profound, racing mount pleasant has built a monument to transience, to yearning, to finding the sublime in each other's ordinary, and to every stage of ... read more

Magdalena Bay - Second Sleep / Star Eyes

jiminy fucking cricket

Edit: Okay, I've collected my thoughts on these two tracks and I do think my original rating stands. The sounds here are still characteristically theirs (what with the dreamy synths and Mica's typical ethereal vocal delivery and high register), but there's a twist to the production that, in a way, reminds me of vintage cosmic imagery -- like the decorations around a baby's crib or Georges Méliès' 1902 film "A Trip To The ... read more

Magdalena Bay - Imaginal Disk

The more music I produce, the more the synths on this LP make my jaw drop all the way to the fucking floor. Did ya'll HEAR The Ballad of Matt & Mica? Are you shitting me? The lead in that first section makes my skeleton skedaddle right through my tonsils and ass cheeks. When they do the tempo change into the reprise of She Looked Like Me, my calves can feel my neurons firing. Every single second of this balls-to-the-wall bonkers project reminds my ears that the world is a good place ... read more

Fuck all the AOTY brainrot, fuck catchlines and openers, fuck quotes and fake intellectualism and all the pedantic amateur critic bullshit. No meandering review. No thought soup. This album is a 10, full stop.

Have a nice day.

Mac Miller - Balloonerism

I might be grieving this man forever.

McKinley Dixon - Magic, Alive!

Telling my grandkids this is TPAB 2

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Phantom Island
79

Slow but fun with fantastic, energetic first and last songs. Unfortunately not as excellent as LPs like Petrodragonic Apocalypse or Nonagon Infinity, but don't be mistaken -- it's still a welcome entry in King Gizz's discog, and with refinement, the orchestral bend to this one could have a lot of potential. 7/10 with a little viola on top.

Tyler, The Creator - DON'T TAP THE GLASS
80

Really solid overall with great production and a fun, playful aesthetic. Not a standout in his discography, but certainly an enjoyable interlude, and one that'll probably stay in my rotation for a while. 7.5/10 + an appreciative nod.

Mac Miller - Circles

No album has made me sob like Circles.

Sampha - Lahai

"He knew only that his child was his warrant. If [she] was not the word of God, God never spoke."
- Cormac McCarthy, excerpt from his 2006 novel "The Road"

In Lahai, Sampha says a whole lot. He discusses time, failing relationships, the metaphysical distance between himself and others, quantum physics, Richard Bach's 1970 allegorical novella "Jonathan Livingston Seagull", freedom, regret, longing, and the fleeting nature of human connection. But what ... read more
