Drake - ICEMAN
63

I feel like this goes 8 for 18, but the worse songs stand out as boring and not the return to form that some claim. The Wraith9 production on National Treasures and the switch up on 2 Hard 4 The Radio demonstrate that Drake should have spent more time experimenting. Nothing has been the same since Nothing Was The Same; Drake's a long way from his 8+/10 days. 63/100 on this one

Black Country, New Road - For the first time
92

I don't know how to say anything that hasn't been said about this project without saying everything I possibly could. I'll just say that each track on this album has blown my mind multiple times over the course of the past 2 years since I've heard it. There are new things that I notice each time. I notice Isaac Wood every time. This is special regardless of the lyrical and vocal performance, but that is what causes me to return to the album. There is a perfect instrumental background that sets ... read more

Denzel Curry - 13
84

This is what solidified my love and respect for Denzel Curry. He demands your attention with beat choice and attacks the beat throughout the project. You won't catch yourself wondering if these are better than some of the stronger album tracks from Imperial and Taboo, but you also won't feel shortchanged by a phoned-in performance. Grimy, gritty, gutsy, and surprisingly intentional are the lyrics and vocal performances by Curry. Zeltron didn't come into the scene just to take part.

Steve Lacy - Steve Lacy's Demo
83

This thirteen-minute project is just as great as it was when it was consistently in my rotation during high school morning bus rides. I didn't drive the bus, but I imagine the driver would love the pulsing guitars with memorable melodies. Lacy's lyrics and vocal choices surprise and impress throughout the project. I will never forget the first and last time I hear Steve Lacy's Demo; the choruses, refrains, and verses slip their way back into my memory. Lacy finds a way to be ahead of the game ... read more

glaive - cypress grove
81

This is an incredible 13 min project from glaive. Considering this is by a teenager during the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown provides the necessary context to appreciate this project. There are consistently catchy melodies and strong production. It isn't surprising that I've accidentally listened to this enough to know all the lyrics.

eyesore - The self-deprecating lyrics, booming synths, and glitchy drums set the tone for this project

glaive - old dog, new tricks
73

The initial version came on strong, but did not have the staying power in my rotation of cypress grove - this disappointed me and I recently returned to this version of the project. I fell back into the formula of this project. This shows growth from cypress grove but lacks the consistency and brevity that makes cypress grove a classic and extremely auspicious start for glaive's career.

1984 - This is a great intro and has some cool imagery in the lyrics in the first verse.
