The melodies on this thing are so wonky (positive)
“With a guitar” is a truly wonderful song.
Good stuff. Also, “Thao and the Get Down Stay Down” is one of my favorite names for a band ever
Joins “to pimp a butterfly” in the list of Albums That Wait Until Near the End of the Very Last, Especially Long Song Before They Finally Reference Their Title
Me: Banjo music sucks
Béla Fleck: Wrong
Me: What? Who are you? How’d you get in here?
Béla Fleck: *uses his banjo to slice my head clean off*
Gorgeous and criminally underrated, especially the first and last tracks. I mean, the STRINGS on this thing, man! The STRINGS!
Hey look, it's The New Pornographers' v i b e s album! Sounds like looking over the shimmering Mediterranean sea during high noon on a warm summer's day.
The cold, chrome night to Brill Bruisers' warm, colorful, velvet day. The first three tracks are unimpeachable. I only play for money, honey.
Just a really fun, well executed album of theirs. A.C. Newman said he wanted to go back to the more classic pornographers sound on this one but instead they channel something different, something shinier, something sleeker, something shimmering. It works very well.
Also, this is hands-down the best album cover of any new pornographers album. It captures the sound perfectly.
My least favorite album of theirs and it’s still overall a very good time. It’s also the album I have the least to say about. “Sweet talk, sweet talk” is probably my favorite song on the album
Is it an existing thing to shorten “Lucifer” to “Lucy” or is that just Kendrick being weird
Vampire Weekend was my first ever favorite band, so I’m very glad they continue to absolutely crush this whole “making music” thing. I might like this more than modern vampires, which is also a masterpiece.
Also, “Only God Was Above Us” is an incredible title.
“Old Money Bitch” sits comfortably in the Top Ten Most Catchiest Songs What I Have Ever Heard List
Does this thing have a couple of misses on it? Sure. But tune yards have such a wonderfully distinctive sound, and by god do they use it to such good effect on complete bangers like “Nowhere Man,” “Make it Right,” “Hypnotized,” “Hold Yourself,” and “Under Your Lip.”
Excellent stuff. Jonathan Coulton is so damn good at making truly wonky chord progressions sound like the most obvious thing in the world. Sticking it to myself-artificial heart-nemeses is a wonderful triple punch of an opener. “Glasses” and “Dissolve” are both great, and “Good morning Tucson” is a Coulton all-timer. Oh, and the portal songs are here! They work better with a digitally modulated Ellen McLain, but it’s still neat that they have a home on ... read more
Probably my favorite pop album of all time, and tragically under-known outside Mexico. Julieta Venegas is a genius. Also, “Lento” sounds like the theme for a beach over world level in a video game and I am HERE for it.
The easiest way for a song to worm its way into my heart is for it to be both weird and catchy.
So.
Watch the YouTube video of their performance of “King of Sweden” on the Colbert show. The lead singer has INCREDIBLE stage presence and performance chops. And he also looks like a freshly divorced libertarian man.
Hot dang this was really great, varied stuff. “Iguana” and “blooodungeon” wouldn’t be out of place on a king gizzard album. “Tastes like metal” is a bangin’ pop song. “Cherry cowboy” is a wistful country ballad. “Pack your bags” sounds like battles meets ratatat. “Alibi” just kicks ass. Lovely stuff that doesn’t take itself too seriously
