Yachty pulls a hard left turn from his previous sound, instead making this record a nice mix of psychedelic funk/rock.
Sonically, it's easily the best thing Yachty's ever put out, thanks to the bulk of production handled by from himself, Patrick Wimberly (Joji, Chairlift), Justin Raisen & Sad Pony (Yves Tumor, MGMT, Charli XCX), and Jacob Portrait (Unknown Mortal Orchestra), alongside some guest producers who turn up at points, including Magdelena Bay & Mac DeMarco.
Its sonically very influenced by artists like Pink Floyd, Tame Impala & MGMT. Lyrically, Lil Yachty does much more melodic singing vs any rapping for the most part, but much of his lyricism is still in a similar vein, very loose and playful.
Occasionally his lyricism does feel a bit underwhelming compared to the instrumentals, but usually it works perfectly fine. Vocally, some of the best moments come when he's really experimenting melodically. A prime example is when he uses the autotuned vibrato we first heard on Poland, but uses it on the track pRETTy, in quite a fantastic way.
There are a few guest vocalists, including Foushee, Daniel Caesar and Teezo Touchdown, and they all continue very well to their respective parts.
All in all, it's a very good body of work from Yachty, and I hope to see him further develop this sound on later releases.
