Coming into this off the back of Glass Animals' "How To Be a Human Being" is an...interesting experience to say the least.
Obligatory bias clarification: my history with this band is sporadically hearing "Istanbul (Not Constanstinople)" and occasionally thinking about the fact I should listen to this band and then never doing it...until now!
Had no clue what to expect going into this but the opening track "Theme From Flood" is a really interesting start to the album despite only being 27 seconds long and, in my opinion, does a really good job of introducing you to the 3 core facets of this album: its nerdy, it's self-aware, and it doesn't take itself too seriously.
The first 2 full songs of the album, "Birdhouse in Your Soul" and "Lucky Ball and Chain" pleasantly surprised me with how much I enjoyed them given my inexperience with this genre, and I found the former to be particularly enchanting to me. Throughout the album, the only one that I really didn't like was the tenth track "Someone Keeps Moving My Chair" as the nasally, borderline whiny vocal performance got annoying very quickly even for a song thats only 2:23, and the slight pause between every syllable really didn't help.
I can't justify doing a full breakdown of every song right now, this was supposed to be just something for me to focus on while doing assignment work, so here's the gist: The songs are short, silly, and simple and they do it splendidly!
I look forward to the next time They Might Be Giants appear on my randomised spin list.
