Dear Seola, I am beyond sorry for not taking the time to review your single before. I listened to it the day it dropped, I watched the MV and your live performances, but I didn't take the time to talk about your solo debut – despite reviewing a few other projects in between (including 2 boygroups :/). I hope you can forgive me, you're my WJSN bias you know? (btw wjsn comeback in 2024???)
Now that I'm forgiven (hopefully), I can write pretty words about her debut.
"Without U" is a pretty nice song to be honest, I reckon it's nothing extraordinary, but I find it pretty catchy. She's doing the whole Pop Rock thing properly, and the blending of Trap from time to time isn't too irritating. I think it's weird how, despite being energetic and catchy, I still struggle to truly bang my head along the track.
The two following songs have nothing in common with "Without U". The electric guitars are traded for smooth and relaxed synths – taking from Deep Bass – and the hard hitting drums are turned into clean 2-Step drum patterns. I enjoy "Let's Talk" and "NO GIRL" a lot, I still have to make up my mind of whether her voice really fits those type of laid back track, compared to what she did with WJSN The Black – as I absolutely loved her tone on "EASY" and "Kiss Your Lips". In that sense, "NO GIRL" might end up being my favourite for the way she goes into a higher range in the chorus and tends to push her voice slightly more than in "Let's Talk".
It's a nice debut overall, I'm not sure if any other members have solo works (outside OSTs), and this might be the beginning of a new chapter in the girls' career. For fans, it's both a nice opportunity and a bad sign. An opportunity to hear the members in a different context, but a bad sign regarding WJSN's future as a group. Starship sucks, and it's so sad they didn't take the opportunity that was given through winning Queendom 2 in 2022 to re-launch the group into the public eye more. I don't know how discussions go inside the company, therefore can't really comment on whether WJSN members have a say in all of this. If they prefer to drop solo projects here and there and release a WJSN album (I wish for a full album, but I don't expect anything more than 5 tracks to be honest) once every 2/3 years, then I'll go with it. But if it's Starship leaving them behind to benefit their two 4th gen babies, then I'm mad.
