Future Funk is an incredibly fun and bouncy genre, and for what it's worth I think Lemkuuja does a really good job of hitting as hard as he can, but I feel like Cheesecake+ is a little too big for its britches. Songs like Ouais Ouais, Hollywood, November and Golden Funky Groove stood out to be as really prominent highlights but there were several tracks where I really don't have anything to say other than that they're there. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's not ... read more
This album has some ridiculously phenomenal work on the back half and a front half that, while still good, pales in comparison to the masterpieces that are El Bosta and Wahdon. Very easy listening experience and Fairuz is an amazing singer whether you understand her lyrics or not. Would 100% recommend to anyone looking for an easy starting point into music from the Levant.
Nearly every song sounds absolutely gorgeous and the ones that don't are still pretty solid. Admittedly when it comes to a genre as vast as Bossa Nova I'm probably going to go to first as I think some of the more fanciful indie rock aspects kind of clash with the more relaxed and pretty tracks that start and close the album (of which Presente is a highlight), but for a debut there is nothing to sneeze or scoff at here. Even with the two main sounds the album has, there's nothing ... read more
Tell me something I didn't already know.
For a project that tries to be a more angry, politically charged follow-up to Dark Times, the actual point of these songs and the message they're getting at feels too little, too late given how much worse everything has been getting on a global scale.
Trump may be responsible for an uncountable number of people across the world getting killed, but it's okay! We called him an orange man and a nazi (sympathizer, let's not get TOO crazy with our language here.)
I love a lot of Owusu's music and, to it's credit, this is overall an incredibly produced project. Save for a stinker or two, the production and features on this thing are fantastic, as is Owusu's writing... almost. See, unlike his previous projects where he ... read more
Endlessly cool album. It feels like if you asked a 12 year old Pr. Fly what the coolest things ever are and made an album off of that. Like, YEAH! MONSTER TRUCKS!!! EXPLOSIONS!!!!! FUCK YEAH!!! IM A SAVAGE SUCKER BOY TOO!!! (lol)
From start to finish it's just such an interesting and varied experience full of badass latin-infused instrumentation and vocals that compliment every song amazingly, this is definitely worth checking out. Every time I revisit the project, I find a new song I ... read more
We get it, man. We know. You're really cool and awesome and make money or whatever. I got that from the first five albums where you said this. You're also a great producer dude. You said that already. And, oh what's this, you're EDGY? WOW! I NEVER KNEW THAT! THANKS FOR TELLING ME AGAIN! I almost forgot how edgy you were when you called yourself Black Ben Carson, or when you made a song about getting horny from killing cops, or when you had that other song about how happy ... read more
I'm not really sure if I can properly articulate how I feel about this album. Every song is short to the point of feeling like a rough draft and Bowie has such little presence on the album (hardly even being on half the album), with Low practically turning into an Eno project. Even so, the exact same things that would make this album feel like nothing more than scattered concepts end up coming together to turn Low into a delightfully macabre listen. Bowie was a broken man at the time of ... read more
Unsurprisingly, Drake is at his best when he is having fun. This album is proof of that, at least partially. The first couple tracks have a little bite to them! Hoe Phase and Road Trips have this really fun, catchy groove that remind me of Nokia, a song I pretty thoroughly enjoyed! Then Drake goes "oh wait, I'm Drake, I'm supposed to be all moodie and sad and ICE COLD MOTHAFUCKAAAA IM SO FUCKING RICH AHHAHAHA I DONT EVEN HAVE TO FUCKING TRY I HAVE A FANBASE COMPRISED OF FUCKING ... read more
This is the worst R&B album ever made.
I've always felt like Drake's R&B potential was never really all that despite having a few stellar highlights early on in his discography with scraps of that energy showing their heads in the form of songs like Passionfruit or the criminally underrated Race My Mind. The thing about most R&B singers, though, that makes them feel like, well, R&B is that passionate soul-rending singing and equally vivid lyricism. I can genuinely ... read more
Some people never change.
What can I even say? I can't even call it another Drake album because even that has gotten repetitive and stale. This is nothing. He just wasted everyone's time. He didn't learn anything. He didn't say anything new. There aren't even any songs on here that are good for late-stage Drake standards. This music is for pigs, and I truly, genuinely believe anyone who claims this album to be even remotely okay should be killed and fed to fellow fans ... read more
I wanted to like this album more than I actually did. the constant drumming and high energy fatigues the album after a while and the second half of the project may as well be one long track arbitrarily split into several pieces. Outside of a couple tracks, this album feels like getting punched by a ghost. Sure, it's brutal, but it's in one end and out the other with no real meaningful takeaway or impact. Just kind of exists.
This shit is seriously beautiful. From start to finish it incorporates all sorts of musical styles that all just WORK. Everything blends into each other perfectly and, while no Since I Left You, is a fierce competitor. Aquamarine is a genuine 10/10 song btw there is literally nothing remotely wrong with a song like that, just 6 whole minutes and 20 seconds of levitating out of my mortal coil
I actually really like the instrumentals on this project. It's bouncy, noisy and really fun and I think that abrasiveness is the closest Stomach Book comes to achieving what they wanted to make with a project like this. The biggest things holding this project back is the fucking delivery and writing. Oh my fucking god. A lot of people who swear that instruments matter more than music because "oh if the song sounds good i don't care if the lyrics are boring because the actual ... read more
I thought the album would get a little tiring after the first couple of tracks didn't really shake things up for me, but after An Ending (Ascent) the album switches up drastically for the better. Song after song after song come in and hit stronger than the last. In particular, the run from Silver Morning to Always Returning is genuinely godly. Overall a very solid listen and a reminder that Brian Eno is really one of the best to ever do it.
While Ben may not be my friend, this album sounds absolutely phenomenal and is WAY ahead of the curve, coming out years before acts like LCD Soundsystem or songs like Fireflies took this sound into such greater heights in terms of popularity. From start to finish, this is a project that is both equally fun and catchy as it is poetic and deeply emotional. Clark Gable in particular might slowly be one of my favorite songs of all time with how manic it sounds and is on a lyrical level. Speaking of ... read more
It's not bad per se with pretty good production overall, but the songs themselves are way too short to leave any lasting impressions. What makes matters worse is that, even though the songs would be short just off runtimes, there are several songs here that feature have nearly a third of their runtimes dedicated to riding out the track. I was excited to see bedtime? with a semi-decently long runtime of five minutes and, while it is pretty handily the best song on the album just because ... read more
It's been a while since I've had the opportunity to listen to a new album in full. I've just been pretty busy relistening to old stuff I like. That being said, of all projects to break that hiatus, I chose a REALLY good one. I actually enjoy Mangum' vocals a lot, and barring one or two tracks in the middle, I don't have a single issue with this project.
