Whitehouse - Racket
80

Brutal as Whitehouse ought to be, yes, but the actual instrumentation takes the forefront of Racket as opposed to the blasting commands fans of Cruise and Bird Seed have gotten used to in their 2000's run. The electronic elements of Whitehouse take a backseat to more African-inspired drumming and sounds more akin to leering, stretched out metal pylons suffering from slow collapse than the usual sounds of grinding reverberating shrieks that the band had as their signature sound. While ... read more

Clipse - Let God Sort Em Out
80

I'll admit that this is my first Clipse project and it's a damn shame because listening to this project makes me want to seriously get into their stuff pre-split. The album starts out so strong with tracks like The Birds Don't Sing, Chains & Whips and P.O.V. and from there it continues this pretty strong streak. Nothing is absolutely mind-blowing, but these guys are so competent at rapping that they managed to keep me entertained the whole way through. I don't think ... read more

Set Fire to Flames - Sings Reign Rebuilder
65

Kind of underwhelming and doesn't really push the envelope as far as what any of these guys are capable of but there are certainly highs on the project like Shit-Heap-Gloria. Truthfully as much as I enjoy drone I think so much of the project's length relies on it to the point where the crescendos are less "oh my god I'm so excited!" and more "oh my god it's finally here"

Still, the music that's there is pretty great. If you liked F# or the earlier ... read more

Justin Bieber - SWAG
55

I don't know how to feel about Justin Bieber. Do I despise him? No. Do I think Yummy wad responsible for the pandemic? Yes. Do I love him? No. Did I secretly enjoy his early-mid 2010s tracks like Baby and Beauty and a Beat? Yes. A lot of the conversation around him feels centered around him being crazy or looney or off his rocker with Druski trying to affirm he has a "black soul" and whatnot but I think a lot of people brush off the sheer extent to which he was treated on his way ... read more

TOKiMONSTA - Midnight Menu

It's alright! I don't think there's much that stands out about it but the second half is really where the album starts to shine.

Black Country, New Road - For the first time
80

You ever listen to that one album that seems to fit into your life almost perfectly? Not in a "literally me" vibey kind of way but an album whose specifics match eerily with specifics of your own stories and life lessons? I didn't think this album of all albums would be that album, but I guess beggars can't be choosers. The album carries this brutally heavy sound that matches with lyrics that revolve around growth of many shapes and sizes. Be it Wood's growth in finding ... read more

McKinley Dixon - Magic, Alive!
90

I didn't honestly think he could get lightning in a bottle after how amazing Beloved Paradise Jazz was but oh my god he managed to pull it off; every song here hits so hard and carries the kind of jazzy optimism that made me fall in love with guys like Chance The Rapper. If there's anyone whose sound and personality are inspired enough to go mainstream, it's him

Pendulum - Hold Your Colour
55

I just am not very fond of this project for all its highs. There are moments and ideas on here that sound soooo cool and interesting and each and every time I think "yes, finally, this album is gonna turn around and give me something crazy" but I get hit with the biggest blast of the most explosive penis music bass drop ever. They clearly know how to make a good song but its like, time and time again they go "yo but it would be *really* funny if we added another bass drop ... read more

Lil Wayne - Tha Carter VI
66

So there I was, listening to this album on the toilet because my hopes were in the shitter. I press play and... it started off extremely strong. The first few songs were genuinely fantastic and even with tracks like Sharks and The Days, I could listen to them and bop my head and appreciate the good word of hip hop legend Lil "Weezy" Wayne. 2Chainz did a solid job on Cotton Candy and all the beats thus far were fantastic, and I'm being genuine when I say this. Truthfully, my ... read more

Loathe - I Let It in and It Took Everything
90

Dude... fuck yes. Listening to this project hits me with a Ratatouillesque flashback to when I was little (yesterday). A time when I'd go onto Stickpage.com and watch short animations just to hear Atreyu's Lead Sails Paper Anchor that backed all the stick figure gore. A time when I *didn't* know just how bad of a reputation nu-metal and metalcore had in the public eye. It carries that angst that I expect from a numetalcore project and some of the riffs earlier on in the project ... read more

Prostitute - Attempted Martyr
78

Awawawawawa!!! Attempted Martyr is a really cool album with phenomenal writing (especially given the genre) and some pretty powerful sludgy riffs! Moments on here are so angry and, given the singer's background, absolutely smothered in political vitriol. You can feel a lot of their passion on tracks like All Hail and M. Dada... but while I feel like the album starts pretty strong and does a good jov of keeping up that energy, I really wasn't too fond of the weirdly horny elements of ... read more

Lupe Fiasco - GHOTIING
80

Flavorful!

While it is short and considered an EP, this feels like Lupe taking the creative drive behind Samurai and applying it to far more abstract concepts. Every song on here is directly inspired by murals and sculptures from around MIT, with the appearance or concept being the starting pad that Lupe takes and uses to create rivers of flowing paint that creates flavors with every idea they reach. And you best believe that Lupe isn't afraid to get high off his own supply and really go ... read more

Don Toliver - Life of a DON
55

This one stings a lot. I don't hate Don Toliver. I liked Heaven and Hell and thoroughly enjoyed most of Hardstone Psycho. I really wanted to say that I loved this album as I always took it to be a black sheep in his discography, but so much of this album feels like snippets and nebulous vibes that don't really go anywhere. The individual songs themselves range from passable to pretty good (Crossfaded is a standout in my book), but the project as a whole is just so much lesser than the ... read more

Airospace - You’re a Liar and You Suck, Who Would Love You?
90

HELLO??? ARE YOU HEARING WHAT IM HEARING??? Great rapping, amazing flows, a genuinely impressive set of skills that includes being able to rap in different languages WITHOUT SOUNDING LIKE A COMPLETE AND TOTAL DORK? Not everyone can do that, but Airospace managed to captivate me in a genre where every artist aims to stupify the listener. There are moments on here that are jazzy and relaxing that are immediately followed by powerful chaotic messes of abstract anger. Seriously, I did *not* expect ... read more

Packaged Bliss - In Search Of...
75

Somehow? This is probably the most obscure project I've ever listened to, as it was a one-off album made by a band that was a bunch of aspiring musicians in college before disbanding. It's a shame that it has fallen into obscurity though, as In Search Of... is one of the most easygoing projects I've ever heard and you can tell every member on this band was having fun in the process of making this sucker. It's nothing daring or forwards-thinking, but the lively vocals and ... read more

billy woods - GOLLIWOG
85

Heads up I'll be referring to the project as G.W. so if you're confused just know I'm not talking about Golden Wind or nothing. Use your context clues!

My respect and adoration for this album is hard for me describe in a way that feels meaningful, but not in the sense that it's some masterfully abstract work of art that is completely lost upon an unassuming Pr. Fly like Billy Woods' work usually is (as Aethiopes and especially WBDTS took a looong time to really grow on ... read more

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Omnium Gatherum
55

Messy overall listening experience (even for Gizzy standards), but there were a few tracks on this thing that I thought were cool. Their heavier tracks always appealed to me even when the band as a whole doesn't, as Infest The Rats Nest remains my favorite project from them, so there were honestly a few tracks on here I found myself thoroughly enjoying. This album is no slouch even if it doesn't touch that album, as this is essentially an unreleased compilation project that manages to ... read more
