The shift from psych rock to a more synthpop oriented sound is an absolute blessing for Tame Impala's third album, tapping into Kevin Parker's magical sense of melody, his infectious basslines and his beautiful, lush production. It's so incredibly well crafted that it's hard to care about the record's few flaws. Ultimately, it's simply a very feel-good sound you want to get lost into.
There is a lot to like on Lorde's return to her more somber and tortured roots ; the braveness of the introspection, the acridity of the sound, the rawness, the intimity. Despite all that, and even if the record's rough edges and somewhat minimalist approach work thematically, it still lacks the melodic intuition and pure musical emotion that made her first two albums so memorable and influential.
Une ... read more
Through a creative, lush and layered production, and an amazingly instinctive sense of melodies, Magdalena Bay really mastered their sound on this second LP. Imaginal Disk is incredibly dynamic, with surprises and unexpected choices at every turn. A very fun, infectious and hypnotic journey, that manage to feel nostalgic, yet futuristic.
Even if the flow of the album can feel a little jarring at times, and a bit unfocused tonally, CHROMAKOPIA still shows Tyler at his most introspective, sincere and vulnerable.
Combining technical complexities and insanely creative ideas across the board, everything in this record is mastered and controlled to almost perfection. It's a very intense, visceral, desperate and melancholic hour, with plenty dynamics not to feel repetitive, perfectly treading the line between melodic and dissonant.
A very captivating, mesmerizing and memorable experience. Nala Sinephro's space exploratory ambiant jazz is as beautiful and soothing, as it is mysterious and intriguing.
The layered and rich instrumentations of this album are the perfect frame for Beth Gibbons soulful, poetic, meditative and existential songwriting. A gorgeous record, displaying raw and exacerbated emotions.
With a dense and ambitious sound, both euphoric and anxious equally, Geordie Greep explores on his debut solo album the internal turmoil of romantic relationships complexities and harmful masculinity standards. A very impressive and mind-blowing album.
GNX is Kendrick Lamar in his rawest, most straight-forward, eclectic and accessible form, with a very fun old school West Coast hip hop feel to it. Even without the boundaries pushing high concepts, or the focus on narrative storytelling that made his previous albums so memorable, there is still a lot of details, layers and substance to delve into. Despite a few misses, notably the pretty weak title track, GNX is still a very worthy addition to Kendrick Lamar's legendary discography.
Not that surprisingly, a Poppy metalcore album, produced by ex-Bring Me The Horizon member Jordan Fish, is a lot of fun. Although not as exciting as the genre-bending I Disagree, or even the powerful statements made by Am I a Girl?, Negative Spaces is still a very well crafted modern alternative metal album. Nothing that groundbreaking or innovative in here, but it is truly exhilarating to see Poppy this confident at making straightforward metal music, following the tracks of her incredible ... read more
Dealing with bleak, heavy, and deeply personal subject matters, Songs of a Lost World is perfectly lyrically focused and emotionally charged. The compositions are very carefully chiseled, the arrangements are gorgeous, and the feelings of sadness and despair are very well complimented by the dense and devastating production. The listening experience feels incredibly cohesive, even though each song manage to bring a new emotion to the table. This is a truly special, deeply impressive and ... read more
Absolutely no surprises for a post-reunion Pixies album, a few interesting ideas drowned in a lot of uninteresting and uninspired stuff. Nothing blatantly terrible, but from the vapid lyrics to the bored performances, "painfully unremarkable" is probably the appropriate term to describe this album.
Being the unexpected second release of the year for The Smile, and with a title like this, it makes sense that Cutouts would feel very eclectic, even chaotic, to listen to. Clearly less cohesive than Wall of Eyes, it's also, on the other hand, a little more instantaneous and dynamic.
If Cutouts doesn't bring a lot of innovation to the overall The Smile experience, the material is still very solid, exploring interesting textures and creating beautiful moments. Although it's ... read more
Over the years, TR/ST music has evolved into a more chill and mellow atmosphere, loosing some of the dark and sensual sounds of his amazing self-titled debut album. Despite lacking some uniqueness and a more defined personality, Performance is still a very solid and enjoyable synthpop record to listen to.
Short, fun, energetic and very constant in quality, this is easily Hinds best work to date !
Impeccable certes, mais imposante ... read more
