addison rae making the most interesting pop music this decade? well…

to be honest, it’s a bit of an overstatement. we’ve had some incredible pop music. especially in the past year. chappell roan and charli are obviously two of the first ones to come to mind. but even sabrina carpenter who before had some middling releases managed to hit big with something fun.

addison manages to take parts of all pop music since its birth and create an angelic landscape, taking inspiration from obviously ray of light madonna, the fame obsessions of lady gaga, provocative and cheeky lyrics like britney, and overall a very strong 90s-00s aesthetic that really resonates with a wider audience.

make no mistake, she manages to make all these things her, while also showing her influences. and i don’t think she’s acting like what she’s doing is a ‘never been done before masterpiece’, which is very refreshing. her influences strengthen her artistic vision rather than dragging her down.

overall, this is a very interesting career we should all be paying attention to for the foreseeable future. i had doubts when she releases her first EP, but this sound is well-thought out and a great ball of fun i can see myself returning to all summer and beyond.
