I was really looking forward to this album. I thought it would be a disco and electronic dance music banger, as powerful as a lot of the popular club music these days. But the final result was just bland and boring, with only sparse disco elements, and the synths overall had no memorable character at all.
Hardly anything stuck with me except the last two songs and a few scattered moments. It felt like I didn’t even listen to it. I also didn’t expect Aperture—which I initially ... read more
After the truly phenomenon-level impact of Brat, what kind of music can Charli XCX offer next? In her companion studio album for Wuthering Heights, she sinks into the emotional terrain of the film and enters a world that feels more primal, feral, sensual, gothic, and direct. She “takes off the sunglasses,” steps away from the frantic swirl of dance floors and club spaces, and returns to the source of her musical sensibility—the gothic pop and gleaming, pure synthesizer sound ... read more
The first three tracks were pretty good, but by the time I got to the sixth and seventh ones, my excitement had completely faded, and I had almost no interest in listening further. Her ability to craft melodies has clearly declined, and the behaviors that fans engaged in because of those so-called diss tracks are even more extremely offensive.
Big Thief’s sixth studio album, *Double Infinity*, retains the intimate warmth that has long defined their sound while venturing into broader, more expansive musical territories. This marks their first work as a trio following the departure of bassist Max Oleartchik. Rather than retreating into the familiar framework of indie folk amid this change, the band chose to collaborate with a collective of musicians at New York’s Power Station studio. The additions of Laraaji, June McDoom, ... read more
Maruja's debut full-length album Pain To Power is an emotional and musical wild storm. This four-piece jazz-punk band from Manchester has rapidly risen to prominence on the global music scene with their unique improvisational approach and electrifying live performances. The album encapsulates the band's musical exploration since their university days and channels raw emotions relevant to the current era, weaving anger and calm, screams and whispers into a layered and intense listening ... read more
Lorde's highly anticipated fourth studio album, *Virgin*, appears to be a distinct departure from her previous work. *Pure Heroine* captured her acute observations of fame and loneliness on the cusp of adulthood, *Melodrama* portrayed the intense struggles within the emotional turbulence of her early twenties, and *Solar Power* was a brief, sun-soaked escape from the noise. After a relatively subdued and even low-key phase in her career, many anticipated Lorde to deliver a ... read more
Danish musician Erika de Casier's past works have always evoked the soft Y2K color palette. In "Still" (2024), we catch glimpses of Aaliyah's soft, quivering falsetto from 2001 and Mýa's sensual whispers... In "Lifetime," she encapsulates her musical experiences from her career, taking on songwriting, composing, and production all by herself. She continues her nostalgia for the 2000s and further traces this sentiment back to the mid-1990s. In the album, ... read more
Miley Cyrus is always unpredictable. From the R&B of 2013's "Bangerz," to the psychedelic music she created with Flaming Lips in 2015's "Dead Petz," to the 1980s rock of 2020's "Plastic Hearts" and the California dance pop of 2023's "Endless Summer Vacation," she never seems to want to settle on a particular musical style. Thus, we are greeted with "Something Beautiful," an album that accompanies a musical film. This ... read more
This album deserves at least a blue mark, right?
Although I think some of the songs start strong but then taper off a bit— the beginning is absolutely brilliant, but the latter half feels slightly weaker in comparison.
Looking back on Lady Gaga's ups and downs throughout her career, it has always revolved around fame and fortune, the self and external influences. She is known for being bold, avant-garde, and constantly pushing beyond her limits. Because of these traits, she has always been surrounded by controversy and doubt. After a decade of career upheaval and relatively unremarkable explorations in the fields of music and film, Gaga now stands on the brink of glory, once again awakening the monstrous ... read more
Some interpretations of old songs bring surprises. For example, in "Come To The City", the almost roaring instruments, in "Burning", the extremely free and unrestrained vocals, and in "In Chains", the moment of grandeur with the vocals taking a back seat. However, the interpretations of the new songs are rather mediocre, and the song selection is also just so-so. The repeated improvisation in "IDLHA" is somewhat insipid. The original version of ... read more
Although it is a posthumous work, objectively speaking, it is indeed not as good as the previous album. Perhaps it is because the artist himself is no longer with us, and this album doesn't quite reflect his will. However, it is still a very good finale. Rest in peace, Ryan.
The third album, *Cowards*, by Squid cements their position as one of Britain's most forward-thinking innovators in the post-punk revival scene. The band not only retains its signature krautrock rhythms, sharp vocals, and powerful bass lines but also integrates electronic elements, math folk, psychedelic baroque pop, and even classical influences into their music, crafting their most expansive, confident, innovative, and layered work to date. This album explores themes of humanity, ... read more
"Eusexua" is a word not found in dictionaries, defined by FKA twigs as "an all-consuming pleasure," possibly achieved through "sex" or moments of complete self-forgetfulness on the dance floor or in clubs. This concept is deeply rooted in FKA twigs' wild nights in Prague, where this intense inspiration forms the pulsating heart and core of the album. Drawing from the explorations of pioneering electronic musicians like an Icelandic artist and Madonna, and ... read more
The Weather Station’s seventh studio album, Humanhood, is a masterful album infused with an improvisational spirit. Tamara Lindeman’s songwriting freely flutters between a diverse range of genres, including rock, jazz, folk, and electronic, continuing the unique tranquil yet tumultuous atmosphere of the critically acclaimed 2021 album Ignorance. With intricate instrumental arrangements and layered auditory structures, Humanhood creates a lush and complex sound texture, reflecting ... read more
