Bloodluxe has bangers, but lacks the structure and flow of its predecessor, 'Halfblood's' tracklist. Slayr's sound has grown off me, albeit just slightly, over the past few months so I'm not as high on this project as everyone else seems to be.
As it's almost impossible ot to compare the two, 'Blackjack' lacks the X factor that brought esdee from 400k to 20 million montly listeners. At the very least Rico isn't doing anything wrong necesarily--I could listen to all of these songs in passing or at a party and it wouldn't kill the vibe, but I wouldn't turn up for it either. A resfreshing shot of substance in an underground that so heavily favors aestheics. Music like this shows that the rage wave of the 2020's is gen z/alpha's version of the punk movement. The project struggles with sounding a bit samey towards the end but if ez can develop some more consistent versatility, the sky is the limit for the young rapper.
Relistened to this maybe 30 times over the last few months. Slayr is by far the most accesible artist in the ug rn which makes me really believe that he'll go mainstream in the next few years. It's refreshing to have "niche" artists such as himself making something that's both innovative and fresh, but also with an appeal to a mainstream audience--he's a figure that hip-hop really needs in a rather stale period for the genre.
He's saving all the good material for the solo album, right? right????
