Kelela - Take Me Apart
95

On her debut studio album, "Take Me Apart", Kelela finds a position between galactic electro-R&B and alternative R&B and pop sounds. Although the album is most successful in it's slow build, emotional and romantic tracks, see "Better", "Frontline", or "Altadena", the album also has great accessible pop moments as well. A standout on that side could be track "Truth or Dare", that captures a perfected playfulness and charisma. At it's ... read more

Lorde - Pure Heroine
85

Lorde seemingly perfectly captures the thrills, rushes, and crashes of young adolescence and being a teenager, on a wonderfully written and both playful and melodramatic debut album. Having written most of the tracks at 15 to 16, she shows early songwriting prowess, especially on the playful "tennis court", deeply intense and biting "ribs", and closer "a world alone.". Where it is it's best, it also is it's worst (which still isn't bad), on single "Team" ... read more

Kero Kero Bonito - Intro Bonito
65

This is such an interesting release to me, especially now in correlation to "Bonito Generation", because it really shows the experimental nature behind the trio. The "real songs" of the album, that aren't clear examples of trying beats and sampling, the album feels more victorious. The quirkier parts of this mixtape feel odd, and fall slightly flat of what they were attempting. Instead of feeling bubblegum pop-like they feel more child's television tracks, "Babies (Are ... read more

Tinashe - No Drama
70

Tinashe stays entirely conventional in the first released single off of highly anticipated album, "Joyride", and it's not a great thing to see come from her. It's not a terrible, or even bad, song, but the artist of a track like "Ghetto Boy" or "Spacetime", would not have released this as their single. It's sure to get some airplay from the audience's though, and that sadly may be the reason it was chosen. Let's hope "Joyride" is more than "No ... read more

The Chainsmokers - Sick Boy
50

The Chainsmokers attempt to evolve (finally), and the release of "Sick Boy" is that attempt. Granted, it's still not good or original, full of cringe worthy lyrics galore, but it's atleast somewhat of an effort to evolve. Still pretty bad though.
