Not what I was expecting.
After listening to the music from Bloodborne I was excited to continue venturing through the soundtracks of FromSoftware games. I saw no better option than to revisit the music of the Dark Souls trilogy. Unfortunately I feel that this first entry's music hasn't aged as well as Bloodborne.
Don't get me wrong because the first Dark Souls has incredible songs and perhaps even the best theme of the entire trilogy. I just found the music a bit too safe for ... read more
Better than I remembered.
When I think about music involving Fire Emblem, I usually think of the tracks from Three Houses and Fates, where the most iconic melodies of the franchise reside in my opinion. I remembered some tracks from Awakening, of course, but they always seemed common to me. After listening to the OST, I see that this impression of mine is due to the fact that I played this game SO MUCH that I became too accustomed to the music, not noticing how rich and interesting it truly ... read more
An improvement, for sure.
Since I decided to review all the Street Fighter soundtracks, I've been slightly disappointed with what I've found so far. I was hoping for iconic tracks and great music, instead, I found some amazing tracks, mostly okay songs, and an annoying amount of mid to bad music. After hearing the previous game’s OST and knowing this one's reputation, I was a little concerned. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised.
Before I dive in, it's important ... read more
Maybe a little too much.
In my previous review of the Tekken 5 soundtrack, I mentioned how many of the tracks were very danceable and how that was a positive thing, bringing a high-energy vibe to the fights. The case is similar in Tekken 8, but here, I found it quite distracting, and not in a good way.
Some of these tracks lean into a "cringe" 2012 Skrillex-style dubstep, sacrificing melody for senseless beats and unpleasant drops. I found several songs quite annoying in that ... read more
Legendary.
I’ve been dragging my feet on this one for a while. I finished the first "Kingdom Hearts" at the end of 2023 and had been planning to review its soundtrack ever since. As you can see, I didn’t do it immediately. I was honestly a bit burnt out on the franchise after jumping straight into the sequel and several spin-offs right after the first game. Some years later, when I finally decided to sit down and listen to this OST, I feared that burnout would return. ... read more
My first OST love.
I'm back for Season 3 of my game soundtrack reviews, and I’m beyond excited to tackle the last of the modern "Persona" OSTs, one that belongs to one of my absolute favorite games.
It’s hard to put into words how much "Persona 5" means to me. In many ways, it shaped the person I am today, my interests, my hobbies, and even my tastes (in women). I'm very passionate about this one despite being the biggest critic of its flaws. ... read more
A downgrade for sure.
"Abzu" features the same composer as "Journey," and both are titles where the music replaces dialogue to tell the story. While the soundtrack is the soul of both experiences, I feel that the tracks in "Journey" were much more purposeful. In "Abzu," the music feels very "samey" and sometimes includes unnecessary choral sections. At times, I had the impression I was listening to a collection of sounds rather than distinct ... read more
Pretty good!
I have always liked "Heavy Rain." Even before playing it, I loved the plot and could not wait to try it for myself. To be fair, now that I have played it, the twist is a bit weak, but what is definitely not weak is the soundtrack.
This OST is great for a detective thriller. It is half emotional and miserable, and half frenetic and tense. The tracks are actually divided just like that. I would say the first half works better for me, but the action parts do their job very ... read more
Beautiful.
Much like other games I have reviewed, "Florence" relies heavily on its music since there are no other sounds or dialogue. In my opinion, this is the best use of a soundtrack I have reviewed so far. It is such an emotional rollercoaster. It switches between heartwarming, tragic, hopeful, sad, and bittersweet. It is a mix of emotions all made possible by a beautiful cello and piano.
The music is not just a background element, it feels alive within the story. Since the game ... read more
Okay, but maybe too quiet?
This is the first time I have reviewed an OST and felt like I had almost nothing to say. The tracks feel very empty. They consist of background textures that loop continuously with only occasional instruments to complement them. Overall, it feels like a void.
It is the kind of music that works well if you just want to sit down and stare out your window at night, watching the world go by. Perhaps that was exactly what the game intended. However, I feel they could ... read more
Creepy as hell.
I never considered "BioShock" a horror game. Despite the presentation, I never felt the way you normally do in a horror game. I believe this is due to the powers and guns that you collect throughout the game, as you never feel defenseless like in something like "Silent Hill." With that said, what a creepy OST.
It is so short but leaves such an impact on you. I remember some of these tracks from the game and I never realized how horrific they sound. All of ... read more
That was pretty interesting.
I was more of a "Jak and Daxter" kid, so I never played the "Ratchet & Clank" games growing up and have no nostalgia for them, except for their appearance in "PlayStation All-Stars." However, after playing the 2016 reboot, I took a liking to this weird creature and his robot friend.
These games take place in space and feature a ton of planets, so, naturally, the score needs to have sci-fi elements and this one definitely does. You ... read more
Uh...
Ever since I played the games, I’ve had the impression that the first 'Uncharted' has a bit of a "filler" energy. The gameplay wasn't as fun as the later entries, and the story wasn't that interesting or funny either. What I'm trying to say is that the game was bland, okay, but bland, and I believe that reflects on the soundtrack.
What a nothing OST. I mean, with the exception of the main theme, no tracks really stuck with me. They're decent ... read more
Epic! Perhaps a bit too epic for me.
I really like the energy of the "God of War" reboot, and that includes the soundtrack. These new games have a grand vibe to them, the music is intense but also brings a more powerful, emotional feeling than the previous games, and I really enjoyed that. The chorus, the strings, and the throat singing all blend together to make every track exciting and, at times, beautiful.
But I’d be lying if I said it didn't wear me out a little by ... read more
GLORY TO ARSTOTZKA!
I mean... there are only three tracks, what do you want me to say?
It's fitting and it's fun, and that's enough.
Top Tracks:
1- Glory to Arstotzka (Main Theme)
2- Good Ending
3- Bad Ending
Finally! Some good fighting game music.
I've been on a bit of a bad streak with fighting game OSTs, the last ones were a bit disappointing, especially considering they were "Street Fighter" games. Therefore, I decided to put this genre on hold for a while. Now, a few months later, I dove into a different series: "Tekken". I played "Tekken 5" a lot on my PS2 when I was a kid, I was pretty bad at it, but I remember loving the energy. It had such an aura of ... read more
A great way to bring back Wolfenstein!
I've heard great things regarding the music of Bethesda-published games from the 2010s, especially the "Doom" and "Wolfenstein" ones. Since my first experience listening to the full soundtrack of one of these games was a bit disappointing (looking at you, "Dishonored"), I was expecting this to be at least better than that. And it was.
This OST has a great flavor to it; it sometimes has a country vibe, then a futuristic ... read more
What a journey (please laugh).
As with some of the other games I’ve reviewed, "Journey" doesn't have voice acting or too many sound effects, so, the music is essential to the atmosphere. But unlike those other games, the soundtrack here IS the game.
The OST of "Journey" was and still is continuously praised by fans and critics alike. I believe the reason for that is that the game wouldn't work without it, it wouldn't make you emotional or give you the ... read more
This soundtrack kinda "cheated."
Since I started reviewing on this profile, I’ve always looked for video game OSTs (Original Soundtracks), which means tracks made specifically for the game, not licensed songs. Most of the tracks in "Life is Strange" are not original, they were previously released and licensed for the game. Normally, I wouldn't even bother listening to them, but I'm making an exception in this case.
The music in this game is simply ... read more
And THAT'S how you make a superhero soundtrack!
Since I was a kid, I’ve always been a huge fan of Batman, and one of the reasons for that is a little game called "Batman: Arkham City." This game was the coolest shit to me, I remember skipping lunch during school breaks just to save enough money to buy the game myself. So, as you can tell, I'm a little biased.
But in all seriousness, this OST rocks. It fits Batman so well and sometimes it's almost uncomfortable ... read more
