Never listened to his songs before but I like NIKI, and she plugged this album on her instagram so I gave it a listen.
this album, for lack of a better term, is just boring. All the songs sound the same, even on the tried where he tried to mix it up (going pop-folk on When I'm around and Sociopath, and taking pop-punk influences on 18). The lyrics are shallow and basic, and the few tracks where he actually showed flashes of songwriting that can be improved (Sociopath, still bad but decent ... read more
i like it. can't quite cage it into one genre. for a track that leans heavily into glitch-pop territory, it doesn't sound too overproduced.
maybe it's just me but it felt too "thin" at some point, like it lacks bass or that certain oomph factor. maybe im talking out of my ass now but really, it's a good song.
Let me start off with a quick story on how I discovered Sufjan Stevens. It was 2012, I was 17 and had just discovered Childish Gambino (who I discovered from Community). Listening to the song Fire Fly, I heard the following lines:

I like it.
full of earworms and showcases Nas' surprising vocal finesse. the vibe of the album is basically feel-good party background music. and that can be both a good and bad thing. MONTERO also eerily feels like Post Malone's beerbongs & bentleys: every song is a banger, all the features just work, but every song also has an expiration date. If lil nas x is in it the industry to reach the highest of highs, he's succeeding, but if he's has any plans of staying there, he needs something ... read more
