One of the most important albums to me. It was essential for me to become a huge fan of music. Though at first I liked Origin Of Symmetry a lot more, this record has grown on me a lot. And it’s simply as good every time I listen to it.

So, what was so special about this album for me? Well, 3 reasons mostly:

1. It’s a concept album. If a band or artist releases a concept album, there’s a chance that I will listen to it. There is an even bigger chance that it will be my favorite record by that band/artist. An album is so much more interesting if it follows a coherent story or plot to me. The end of the world, from different perspectives and its effects on people, is also an extremely interesting idea to write an album about.

2. It’s an emotionally sincere project. Unlike recent Muse albums, this one actually feels as something they truly wanted to do, and something Matt really poured his emotions, ideas and thoughts into. Dealing with themes like losing love, faith, religion, literally Stockholm syndrome, and even death, it’s an incredibly profound album. Coming from Muse, who even though I love, they almost never shine in that aspect. Though political, it revolves around true feelings than the in-the-face politics of “THE GOVERNMENT IS CONTROLLING US” from their works nowadays.

3. The more laid back sound. Last album, you got Matt screaming with virtuosity, using a falsetto so high you would think someone kicked him in the balls. You also had crazy and energetic instrumentals, with guitar, heavy bass, piano, and pretty much other grandiose elements for grandiose music. And even though I of course love that sound a lot, I also absolutely loved the change from that to a more tranquil, ordered sound, with even the more heavy and virtuous songs (like Stockholm Syndrome, Fury and Butterflies & Hurricanes) being a lot more organized and chill than the heavy and virtuous songs on OoS. I also really, REALLY love the actual tranquil and slow songs on this. Blackout is beautiful, Endlessly is extremely gorgeous, and Ruled By Secrecy is seriously one of their best songs. They are a band known for their fun and energetic works, but when they decide to make slow songs, they usually never miss with them.

As an extra, I love Fury. One of my favorite songs on the album, the obviously Morello influenced guitar is so good, God damn. It belongs in the album, and I’m glad they decided to put it in its original “Bonus Track” placement from Japan in all countries in streaming.

There’s nothing I can really add to this. It was a vital piece for me to start liking music so much, and it will forever hold a special place in my heart. One of the most beautiful listens for me. 100. Thank you if you’ve read this til here.
