James Blake’s sophomore record, Overgrown, is a less adventurous but equally icy and far more competent grouping of songs than his debut where his vocals & writing shine, while the arrangements themselves are much more focused. Not every moment is incredible, but by this point he was very close to making the best music of his career.

Malcolm Todd refuses to put a shirt on and threatens to oafishly seduce hordes of women but also one special woman… I’m not exactly sure, but it goes on for far too long. What I do know is, this would go crazy if I lived in a frat house.

Bootsy’s 3rd album in 3 years, Bootsy? Player Of The Year is his most unapologetically weird. It’s extremely triumphant, inviting & horny, but at its best when Bootsy takes over vocally. His voice is so uniquely smooth while the songs themselves are too, though there are some less inspired moments. That being said, everything is at least solid and in most cases it’s perfect or damn near. What a record.

While James Blake’s experimental Art R&B approach to his debut record was a refreshing shock at the time, in hindsight it lacks the focus and follow through of many of his later works. The songs all come together well enough as a whole, but I never find myself actually wanting to listen to them in any context. James Blake’s self-titled debut is more an innovative marvel than it is an enjoyable or fully fleshed out experience.
