Ab-Soul - Do What Thou Wilt.
40

As an Ab-Soul fan, I was really excited to listen to this, but I came away super disappointed. Despite sufficient beats and features, the issue that resides at the core of this album is Soul himself. The sixteen tracks are littered with cringey similes, nonsensical concepts and aimless lyrics. He tries so hard to make a deep album, but ends up saying nothing at all.

SiR - Her

Quality set of mellow, personal slow-burners. Cadillac Dreams is a standout.

Big Sean - I Decided.

Finally, a quality, cohesive album from Big Sean.

A$AP Rocky - LIVE.LOVE.A$AP

Great debut mixtape. Production is insane & he can actually rap.

Isaiah Rashad - The Sun's Tirade

I think I like Cilvia Demo more, but I fw this

Bryson Tiller - T R A P S O U L

I enjoyed this. Songwriting is sharp and poignant, and the beats were solid. Excited to see what this guy does in the future.

Dame D.O.L.L.A - The Letter O

He can definitely rap, but this gets boring/corny at times. Considering he did this for shits and giggles, though, this is pretty good.

Nas - Illmatic
100

One of the best albums of any genre you'll find. The flows and beats are top-notch, and the influence it's had on modern rap is indelible.

A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
100

Somehow, ATCQ took their impressive debut project and expanded on its sound, creating something even better. Tip and Phife's verses are even more brilliant, and the samples are more full-bodied. This album stands out even more to me considering how tough it is to follow up a classic debut and make a really great sophomore album. The Low End Theory may not have the highest highs of any album, but it's tough to find one with fewer flaws.

Lance Skiiiwalker - Introverted Intuition

I liked this. It's certainly a sparse album, but it's also a refreshingly raw and honest take on RnB/Soul, and shows he has a ton of potential. I also thought the in-house TDE production added a lot to this record. He could have cut some of the skits though, they didn't really add much. Overall, once he builds and expands on his sound, I think he can make some really good stuff.

Standouts: Could It Be, Toaster, Lover's Lane

Meek Mill - DC4
62

The features are super formulaic, Meek substitutes flow and lyrics for yelling once again, and more importantly, doesn't yell about anything of substance. "On the Regular" is dope, but the sample was predictable and has been done before (Hate Me Now). "Two Wrongs" is dope too, only because he raps about something of substance. I thought overall this album was a step back for Meek, as it showcases his flaws more than his strengths.
