Phendrana's debut was my favorite Metal album of 2018 (coming in at #2 overall just behind Emma Ruth Rundle's "On Dark Horses"). The combination of Post-Black Metal and extended, proggy sections was mystifying. Now, seven-and-some-change years later, mastermind Anuar Salum graces us with another progventure that is as compelling as it is unique. The majority of this relatively short (38 minutes), four-song platter is taken up by the ambitious 18 Minute long closer "The Effigy & The Titan" (which also features frontman Daniel Droste of Ahab). Where this albums tones down the Metal for the most part, it amps up the Opeth-esque Prog sections. The songs weave around central themes and return in some very well-executed songwriting. Vocals are all over the place, from the soaringly ethereal vocals of Ana Bitrán, through Anuar's DM style growls, and Droste's nautical Doom vocals legendary of Ahab. Guitar work is excellent and the melodies hearken a lot at times of Opeth, which was clearly a big influence on this album. Production is vibrant and clear, and everything feels very purposeful. An excellent second album from one of Metal's brightest stars.
