This Columbia release of the 2001: A Space Odyssey soundtrack is overshadowed by the MGM/Indica Records (complete soundtrack), released the same year: 1968. This album features 2001 on the A side, and the B side featured music by Karl-Birger Blomdahl. As you can see - the album cover features an image of the star child as an embryo in space. I would definitely nominate UMMAGUMMA as easily the most underrated album.
Astonishing that such a brilliant work is given such poor ratings. Utterly ridiculous!

I fully agree. The band's first incarnations were unquestionably the best. The first two albums, as well as Atem, are somewhat shadowed by the other albums, nevertheless, the quality of their albums from 70 to 78 is very consistent.

In comparison to their last few albums, this is noticeably better. The IDM traces give it a contemporary feel and make it a much more interesting listen compared to the previous release. Still, it doesn't go much further than that, so skipping it is perfectly reasonable
