As a french listener, Fairuz is one of those great voices whose name you often hear. You hear it on TV when an artist from the Lebanese diaspora talks about their main musical influences, or from almost any lebanese person who often mentions her as a major inspiration. And yet, until now, her music was completely unfamiliar to me. I vaguely knew "El Yom Ollika" thanks to Madonna’s beautiful, though somewhat misplaced, sample on "Erotica", but nothing more.
So I ... read more
Simplicity is sometimes the best recipe for creating a classic.
Giving this Carole king album a perfect 100 when it lives in the shadow of Tapestry might seem excessive, and yet it is on Rhymes & Reasons that King truly reaches the height of her artistry. You’ll find her familiar formula here: vulnerable lyrics delivered with a sensitive, heartfelt performance, carried by warm, inviting melodies, all with a new sense of ease in her discography. The songs unfold more generously, and ... read more
This time, i’m more on critic’s side.
I have to admit i’m pretty much the target audience for this kind of project : a long, sugary album carried by airy, ethereal instrumentals. Nothing revolutionary in itself, but a well-crafted record overall.
That said, the singer’s voice sometimes lacks depth and almost gets lost in the production which tends to take up too much space.
Fav track : Secret Love
Least fav track : Rocks
I’m usually not a fan of prequels, and for good reason. Back in November 2024, Cosa Nuestra managed to highlight the culture of an entire region with a fresh and diverse sound, all while staying cohesive and full of identity. It wasn’t my favorite Rauw Alejandro album, but it was definitely his most personal and accomplished.
Now, a year later, Capítulo 2 naturally follows in the footsteps of what had already become a standout project. The production is still top-notch, ... read more
Like La Question, Entr’acte didn't achieve the commercial success it deserved upon release and unfortunately never entered the canon of widely celebrated classics. It remains a hidden gem in Françoise Hardy’s discography, and what a gem it is !
Despite a somewhat hesitant opening with two less striking tracks, the album truly takes flight with Je n’aime pas ce qu’il dit, a baroque pop ballad that captures everything beautiful about the genre: hushed ... read more
FTBC is one of those albums you can only truly grasp if you experienced the sheer intensity of its release firsthand.
Back in 2020, I was 13. The world felt like it was collapsing, and I had already mostly stopped attending school months before the lockdown even began. Everything was spiraling. Yet, in that period of uncertainty about what tomorrow would bring, I started (like so many others) to dive deeper into my own artistic tastes, especially music. It was during that pivotal stretch of ... read more
1971 stands out as a turning point in contemporary music, a year when artists on both sides of the Atlantic were pushing boundaries and redefining their sound. In France, Serge Gainsbourg teamed up with Jane Birkin for an audacious concept album built around the number seven, while Léo Ferré gave voice to a profound and universal sense of loneliness. Meanwhile in Brazil, Chico Buarque released one of the most powerful records of the dictatorship era, and Elis Regina unveiled her ... read more
Each new Kali Uchis album sets a higher bar, until the next one raises it even further. Sincerely is no exception.
