Well, here we are. Much like the journey undertaken by the album's protagonist, the years spent waiting for this album were at once grueling and invigorating. Having finally reached Sunya, the question must be asked: was it worth it?
Yes. Most certainly, yes.
If Antimai radicalized me, Sunya reminds me what it is that I'm fighting for. Opposing its predecessor’s tongue-in-cheek cynicism, Sunya is an album oozing with optimism and wanderlust in such a way that you're able ... read more

Sometimes an artist is number one in the world for a reason, I suppose. While I certainly know how I'll feel about this album for the foreseeable future, I get the distinct feeling that this is going to age really, really well. It's the kind of album where, however good public opinion around it now is, it will just keep getting better. We all know what the centerpiece is here. I have to imagine that that was the primary reason this was recommended to me at all. But! I was pleasantly surprised by a few of these tracks, set amongst the swathes of yawn honk mimimi boooooring ones. Like, Timor? As good if not better than the central hit. There is no world where that gets as much radio play as something like Hips Don't Lie, but by god does it deserve it. Anyway. Oral Fixation Vol. 2 is the most important ... read more

I got baited by Estimated Prophet into thinking I would like this as much as I did their previous release (Blues for Allah, also one of the first albums from the series), but…damn, this is a load of nothing for the most part. Aside from the opener and the title track, which are pretty great and carry the shit out of the good score, you're in for an incredibly middling time that for the most part lacks in fun and creativity. Yeah yeah yeah, fucking kill me over it why don't you. Maybe I deserve to be put down for even thinking this, but Abbey Road is, at least to me, nowhere near as ‘good’ as it is important. Yep, I just had a lot of fun here. Falsettos is really unique musically, I reckon- as much fun clarinet work as you might expect, and frankly I'd be disappointed if that wasn't what I got from this. It perfectly lends itself to the story it's trying to tell with the characters it's being told with, and that is the most I can ask of any musical at all. So often they fall into the trope traps, whereas Falsettos avoids them altogether thank fucking god. ... read more
