The Marías - Submarine

I’m not a big fan of bedroom pop because of the tendency for songs to start sounding indistinguishable from the massive amounts of lo-fi tracks that already exist, but Submarine was a pleasant listen with some interesting sounds. Zardoya’s breathy and light vocals are definitely the core of The Marías’ sound, but I really enjoyed what the rest of the band was able to add to many of the tracks.

One thing that kept this album from being boring is the way that The ... read more

Searows - Death in the Business of Whaling

The strongest selling point of this album is the way that it manages to pull you completely into a different world, as if you're stranded at sea and trying to find your way, all while escaping from your haunted past.

Every track on Death in the Business of Whaling is like a puzzle piece that carries with it the atmosphere that gives this album its unique sound. Put together, it's an incredible listening experience from start to finish, where Searows' beautiful vocals tinged with ... read more

The best way I can describe this album is that it feels like when you get six hours of sleep, don’t want to go to work, and you’re in a perpetual state of grogginess that not even coffee can fix. Occasionally the caffeine will kick in and you’ll get a certain burst of energy, but then your consciousness retreats back into a hazy dream.

With his dual LOVE WEI BACK EPs, Weibird takes us on a nostalgia trip through the 80s and 90s. In particular, LOVE WEI BACK Vol. 1 transports us to the 80s, an era of Mandopop that I have nearly no knowledge of...and maybe because of that, it took me a few listens through the EP to come around to it. Watching the MVs also made me chuckle. This might be the most abstract (抽象) thing I've seen from Weibird...genuinely something only this guy can cook up lmao. Without further ado, ... read more

NMIXX - Blue Valentine

MY GIRLS FINALLY GOT THEIR RECOGNITION!!!!!

It has been a fun journey as an NSWER following NMIXX's growth trajectory over the past few years. I hopped on board around the time that DICE was released, when everyone wrote off NMIXX and Mixxpop as a cheap attempt to copy SM "change-up" songs like Next Level. I have always loved O.O and DICE (much more than their first commercially successful title track, LMLT) but admittedly, NMIXX started at rock bottom in terms of popularity. ... read more
