Wake Up Calls
In an old, worn church in England sat a grave. The grave of a man who, according to some, was a genius but, according to himself, a fraud. The grave of a man who spent his entire life trying to create a lasting legacy, just to be overshadowed by another after his death. The grave of a man who stood upon the corpses of those he abandoned, just to be abandoned himself. This man only had one person standing with him till the end, and that person is still standing with him, with ... read more
As I listen to this album, I find myself liking it a little more. The inventiveness and creativity in the music really shine through. Each song is quite unique. Madilyn Mei is putting some whimsy and circus-like quality to this one, and I am liking it. There are times when it gets a little too much, but that is all part of the fun.
I really enjoy this album. A lot more free and light compared to Day/Night. It is a return to form; they are more carefree, whimsical, and lighthearted. The thing is, this album is more repetitive than the others. I feel like I'm listening to the same song over and over again. Don't get me wrong, that song is really good, but I would like some more variance, ya'know?
This just in, it is even better. Not by much, but it is. They have really nailed their style, and I am greatly enjoying it. It's like the first album, but more cohesive and packaged (not saying that the first one was incohesive). I like the contrast that each disk presents; it provides a nice shift in tone that is greatly needed in an album as long as this one. I enjoy this album quite a bit; it is so smooth in its transitions and is just an easy, atmospheric listen.
Metal, rock, and just a tinge of pop? Even though it isn't hitting as hard as I wanted it to be, I didn't know Portugal. The Man was chill like that. The album cover goes undeniably hard.
I'm liking this album. It has her signature style, which I quite like. It is very alt-pop-y, though. There are some standout songs on this album for sure, but otherwise, it is pretty homogeneous with the genre.
