Sometimes I struggle to accurately assess Rihanna’s albums due to my heavy standom of her in high school, but it makes for fun times analyzing her career as an adult. Unapologetic screams career transition to me. It made perfect sense coming from the pop princess that released back to back to back annual pop albums; it continues the trend most of her pre-ANTI albums (except for Rated R, we love you Rated R!) had of an undercooked/nonexistent overarching vision. Yet, it (and to a lesser ... read more
A lot of this blended together to me but I still enjoyed how maximalistic it was. Other times it lowkey reminded me of staring at the sun for too long

Such a fascinating thing to release after folklore and evermore. Why? Why would she release this weird ass album after finally becoming appreciated by critics? Oddly enough the closest thing I can compare this album to is ANTI by Rihanna. But like safer. Amazing. There are a few great songs on this (The Great War might be her best written song ever) but the cracks that led to her most recent disasters were definitely starting to show. Because there are definitely some stinkers on this too ... read more
Kinda corny sometimes but some of the beats were great. Idk why I'm so obsessed with the Lena Dunham name drop

I don't love that many songs on here but there are a few great ones where her talents really shine. I can't decide whether she's better at singing or storytelling.

I find this album so adorable. These are songs so sincere in ways that only insanely talented angsty teenagers would be able to write. Quiet as it’s kept this is better than Riot 👀

There are some duds on here but the good songs on here are really god damn good. It’s amazing to see how she built off of the best parts of Endless Summer Vacation. This sound suits her well and she executed it nearly perfectly. Super cohesive also

I used to really not enjoy her just because of her songs being so damn short. I now realize I was being unfair. She gets her shit off her chest and keeps it moving. I don’t think there’s anyone as big as her doing what she’s doing.

Every time I say anything about this album it gets uncomfortably adulatory to the point where I have to stop myself but whatever. She just gets it. Most pop artists make pop music because it’s safe, like it’s all they can do. Carly Rae Jepsen does it because she loves it. She loves pop music. Yet at the same time, she does it with such hunger that it seems as if it’s all she’s ever known—it’s like she’s fighting for its survival. How she made pop music ... read more

This was one of my favorite albums of last year—definitely one of my favorite rock albums in a while. It’s so focused on a single sound yet they do everything they can with it. These melodies are so, so god damn good. I find myself constantly singing Backseat and The Question to myself multiple times a day.
Almost every single song on this is in my library now, and the ones I didn’t save weren’t bad at all.
