Selected Ambient Works 85-92 left me blown away at just how far electronic music can be pushed without maximal production. Through clever syncopation and textural ambient synth usage, Aphex Twin redefines what dance music and electronic as a whole can sound like. This is a stunning record that I would recommend to anyone regardless of taste.
Is there anything else that needs to be said about this record? A modern masterpiece that makes you feel every second of Kendrick’s stories. It’s fair to argue that this album is possibly the greatest ever made.
Written and recorded in response to the continuous wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as the tragic murder of Dimebag Darrell, The Blackening highlights the pointless violence of war and rages in the name of peace and revolution. Bleak, outraged, accusatory, and sprawling—the Machine Head album serves as a modern gold standard for politically charged metal music.
A forceful, explosive, and loaded LP by Maruja. Some of the best punk I have heard so far as a non-punk listener. Dense with noise and packed with terrible outcry for more love in a divided world; the only thing holding it back for me is on-the-nose lyricism. Aside from a lack of more complex lyrical packaging, Pain to Power stands tall as one of my best albums of the 2020s so far.
