a delight to listen to right off the bat. one of those, for me, where you immediately understand the overwhelming critical reception
I was pulled in by Ta Fardah— which is head and shoulders above every other track in terms of production, writing, and oomph. The rest is fine, but nothing grabbed me in the same way that one did. Perhaps the only other notable one was Flying Fox.
I stumbled upon this stoned and thought it was the greatest thing ever… listening again the next day, I’m revising that to be a solid “pretty good.” The stylistic range is pretty impressive, especially for a debut album, and there are some flourished throughout I really enjoyed.
Fun little album, I think the horns throughout are a blast. Very emotionally evocative
No idea what the definitive public consensus of Mitski Album Ratings is, but this one is my favorite by far. It’s a little rough at the edges and not quite as polished as later work, but that’s what I appreciate about it. Mitski is a master at making you feel sad about breakups you never had.
