While this album has some great moody & pretty riffs, the vocals are just laughably bad at times. The vocals are very dull and flat. This has really made it hard for me to enjoy this era of Katatonia. Aside from a few songs. I Break and Stalemate are the standout tracks here imo.
A very interesting take on black metal. The whole album has such a haunting but beautiful sound. It gets a little repetitive near the end of the album. But I will for sure be having some of these songs on repeat!
Such a wonderful mix of death and prog metal. I can picture such a strong scene when listening to this. Aimlessly walking through a dark forest. Spirits following not far behind. Like i'm mourning a loved one. I mean any album that feels like being in a dark forest is a win in my mind.
Great gloomy sounds. It does get a little boring in the middle. But honestly, this album is great for studying or homework.
I love this album quite a bit! Such good riffs with a unique groovy sound. Been a favorite for years now. This album, and band, makes me feel like i'm part of a hieronymus bosch painting. Obviously that's due to the sick ass cover. But the songs also have this ancient weirdness to them. I haven't heard another band that scratches the itch for me the way Cathedral does. Many great riffs to head-bang to.
This album has a sound so soul-crushingly beautiful it brings me to tears at times. I like to close my eyes and picture myself floating in a dark abyss while listening to these songs. I feel the emotion deep in my soul. On top of that, this album has amazing riffs and vocals to match.
Perfect, no notes.
Very derivative black metal album. Has some good moments, but gets overshadowed by boring riffs, and some goofy vocals. This album personally does nothing for me.
I remember listening to this in a few years ago and not really liking it. But, now that my taste has evolved I suppose, I’ve really come to like it. I really love the focus on atmosphere. The overall sound of the album is perfect. I do feel like it’s still missing more memorable riffs, but I really did feel like I was travelling through another planet.
I'm always disappointed when I listen to this band. For this album, the production is good, the baselines are sick. But overall it's missing so much for me. What is that exactly? I'm not sure. Just feels a little empty and unfinished.
The lyrics are very repetitive, which can feel a little cheap. But the sound, and overall feeling of this album emotional and heavy. The atmospheric and sludge sounds blend together amazingly.
A beautifully evil sounding album! Can drag a tiny bit, but this has such a unique blend of doom, sludge and black metal its unforgettable. Glad we got Triptykon after this.
Russian Doll is good, but every other song is fine, but mostly forgettable to me. Crazy this band started out making black metal.
Solid death metal album. Enjoyable for the most part except the Venom cover.
I listened to this album on vinyl, and it made me like it even more! It sounds like a concert in hell, and that's exactly the vibe I think black metal should give. Iconic.
Many epic and catchy doom riffs to really transport you into a fantasy world!
