finally actually putting a review in here for this after a few listens
some of this REALLY works for me, and some of it just kinda washes over me in a way i don't find totally interesting. overall a really cool project, and i'm very excited to see what doechii does next
fave tracks: bullfrog, boiled peanuts, denial is a river, catfish, nissan altima, stanka pooh
least fave tracks: skipp, fireflies, alligator bites never heal
purely as an aggregate of the individual track scores:
disc 1: 76
disc 2: 78
but those scores are tanked a bit by a few songs that i am really not fond of (and just simply don't hold up when looking at them through today's lens). this is a really ambitious, kinda messy record. it's hard not to compare it to is a real boy, which i think overall is far more cohesive and fun to listen to, but it does stand on it's own legs well enough. the highs on this album are REALLY high, ... read more
i enjoyed this SO much more than their first album. really solid record. punchy and emotionally resonant
fave tracks: violet, machines, paper tigers
least fave: you deserve to be haunted
a really pleasant listen across the board, but waaaay too bloated a tracklist. this album starts out incredibly strong, but by the end i felt fatigued. florence and lana were both underutilized as well imo
fave tracks: wake me up, open hearts
least fave: timeless, drive
some very strong moments but overall this didn't hit me the way FKA twigs previous work has. the choruses were all incredible but i found some of the verses to be incredibly lacklustre (particularly on striptease and wanderlust, which i would have adored if they had verses that landed for me).
favourite tracks: eusexua, girl feels good, perfect stranger
least favourite tracks: keep it hold it, childlike things
honestly better than i remember it being. some of the poppier moments don't work as well for me and i don't think they've aged particularly great either, but there's a lot of really solid stuff on this album.
favourite tracks: kill caustic, miss murder, love like winter, the missing frame, kiss and control
very listenable and pretty, but not particularly engaging or interesting enough for me to want to return to
absurdist and ambitious. i can appreciate the effort more than i appreciate the end product
atmospheric, invasive and drenched in a feeling of uncertainty. like an inability to escape your own thoughts, your own self, your own fate.
didnt rate this the first time around because i thought maybe i was just being a hater. but on a second listen, im really just not a fan of this. its not bad but its not nearly as fresh and original as everyone seems to want me to believe it is. i find chappell's vocal choices grating a lot of the time. and the lyrical content is repetitive - i feel like every track on here has a mirroring track with almost the exact same theme/message? idk. wish i could like this the way everyone else ... read more
i really wanted to like this more than i did :( i much prefer poppy screaming over metal tracks vs her singing over generic alt rock radio instrumentals
top tracks: have you had enough, they're all around us, the center's falling out
85 > 74
on revisiting, this just doesn't hit as hard for me. the songs that work REALLY work (i love 365, sympathy is a knife, b2b, so i) but there's a handful of songs that are nearly unbearable for me (i might say something stupid, i think about it all the time, everything is romantic).
i don't even know what to say about this mess. multiple songs were released years prior and should have no place on a new record at this point. they released half these tracks as bad singles, and the ones that weren't released as singles are just pure dogshit. there is no cohesion on this record at all - it can't seem to decide what it wants to be. and i don't even mean that just because of the multiple genres they poorly represent here.
and lyrically... my god. ... read more
hard album to rate. overall i think im pretty positive but also this feels like a huge mashup of mcr, the used, taking back sunday and pierce the veil. but i like all those bands so????
