My personal favourite album in The Mountain Goat's entire discography. Full of heart, full of soul, each and every song in The Life of the World to Come is nauseating and beautiful if heard at the right time, by the right ears. It's about love, about hope, faith and devotion, when it's all that we have, when it eats us up inside, and when it isn't enough.

John Darnielle, in reference to Waving At You, a song from an entirely different album, once said "Everybody else assumes the louder I sing, the more deeply I'm feeling the emotions, [...] but it's the quiet moments where the shadows sort of start to flesh themselves out."

A masterpiece of traditional Mexican folk. There truly is nothing like this album, it flows together to make a most delightful, symphonic ensemble of songs, yet most tracks still stand their ground in isolation, none of them unpleasant or weak in comparison to the other. As an album, it's nothing to write home about. While it sticks closely to its whimsical sound and love for synthesizers, it does offer some musical variety, with slower a gentler feel, and occasionally a dip into different genres.
