It’s no wonder they didn’t want to release these on a dedicated album; it would’ve been the only time they didn’t do something new in their whole career. Most of the songs are okay enough but suffer to varying degrees from generic sound and kitschy lyrics. Highlights like The Light Behind Your Eyes unfortunately do not do make much of a difference for the overall quality.
Having listened to this one a probably triple-digit number of times we unfortunately finally have to admit that it’s a very disjointed album. Shine On You Crazy Diamond and the title track are some of Pink Floyd’s best; they hold up both in isolation as expressions of mental alterity, regret, longing and, above all, love, as well as tributes to a real person which are much more nuanced than how the band usually talk about him.
