DJ Khaled - GOD DID

If i wasn't on prozac i'd have probably been able to cry tears of pain while listening to this

Thurisaz - Scent of a Dream

Really fantastic melodic black metal that has one foot in and one foot out when it comes to its symphonic and folky elements, it almost at times doesn't sound like black metal but then swiftly will come back and remind you it's a black metal album with really ferocious segments.

As for the production and recording: There's lots of clean vocals as well as harsh vocals, acoustic guitars, synths, and of course your typical metal instruments which don't need to be mentioned. The production is ... read more

Christ Agony - Moonlight - Act III
90

Black metal that tastefully experiments with acoustic / clean + distorted guitar layering, something I've drew influence from with my own black metal projects. The songwriting is really solid and almost every song is memorable. The clean hook on Mephistospell is actually kind of infectious.

Well mixed and produced too, but still oozes that black metal charm.

Highlight(s): Asmoondei, Devillish Sad, Mephistospell

Horna - Hiidentorni
74

Meat and potatoes black metal from 1997, guitars, bass, drums, AAAAAEEEERRRGHHHs all around. Track 2 first riff is almost the same as a riff from I Am The Black Wizards.

Korn - Follow The Leader
85

Korn's second best album imo

Highlight(s): Got The Life, Freak on a Leash, Children of the Korn, BBK, Pretty, Justin, Seed

Gorguts - Obscura
87

The "Calculating Infinity" of the metal world.

Immortal - Battles in the North
91

The sound of an avalanche burying you alive in the frosty peaks.

Highlight(s): Battles in the North, Grim and Frostbitten Kingdoms, Cursed Realms of the Winterdemons, Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark).

Immortal - Pure Holocaust
100

A staple of raw black metal. Enough said.

Highlight(s): Unsilent Storms in the North Abyss, Frozen by Icewinds, Pure Holocaust, The Sun no Longer Rises, A sign for the norse hordes to ride, as the eternity opens

The Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity
100

Taps into something totally batshit insane and primal, also incredibly memorable to say there's not a lick of conventional melody to be found. Can remember most of this album in my head since first discovering it in 2019.

Highlights: Sugar Coated Sour, 43% Burnt, Destro's Secret, Clip the Apex... Accept Instruction, Calculating Infinity, Weekend Sex Change

CKY - Infiltrate•Destroy•Rebuild
90

Who knew the combo of an octaver and fat fuzz pedal would lead to such an original sound.

Highlight(s): Flesh Into Gear, Frenetic Amnesic, Attached at the Hip, Inhuman Creation Station, Close Yet Far, Escape from Hellview

In Flames - State Of Slow Decay
80

Return to form, sounds like a Slaughter of the Soul era At The Gates track with In Flames' penchant for dual guitar harmonies injected + the metalcore choruses of later In Flames. Good stuff, will be excited to see how this album compares to The Halo Effect which is pretty much entirely made up of Ex In Flames members.

Deicide - Legion
90

Still the most demonic dual vocals in the history of death metal, amazing riffs, really fucking technical and still memorable. Dead but Dreaming total headbanger.

Highlight(s): 'Satan Spawn, the Caco Daeomon', 'Dead but Dreaming', 'Trifixion', 'In Hell i Burn', 'Revocate the Agitator'

Dark Tranquillity - Projector
82

This album is how i'd imagine Depeche Mode would sound if they swapped out the synths for distorted guitars and became a metal band, just listen to the chorus of ThereIn and tell me you can't imagine Dave Gahan singing that hook.

Xynfonica - A Feast for Famished Ravens

Man i kinda wanna give this atleast 1 point for being of comedic value but I just can't.

Paramore - All We Know Is Falling
41

Still like Pressure as a guilty pleasure kind of thing, rest is ass.

Immolation - Here in After
97

I think Ross Dolan really doesn't like god, i might be wrong though...

In all seriousness, this is by far the best Immolation album imo, it's not the most accessible though, the songs all have very convoluted structures and weird jolty riffs, but when it clicks, it fucking clicks and this album has by far the darkest atmosphere of any album they released. Closer to a World Below comes very close to being as good as this one.

Highlight(s): Nailed to Gold, I Feel Nothing, Away from God (my ... read more

Sibylle Baier - Colour Green
88

I love how personal this album is, it feels like an audible diary.

Highlight(s): Tonight, Remember the Day, William, Colour green, Girl, forget about, give me a smile

Alghazanth - Thy Aeons Envenomed Sanity
77

Cool obscure late 90's meloblack. Track 2 and 3 are amazing the rest is pretty forgettable. Good production though.

My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade
92

My Chemical Romance is an unfairly maligned band, partly because of the cringe subculture and tumblr fanbase this band amassed over the course of their career. But their music speaks for itself and this album is the peak of their pop-punk / post-hardcore sound. Every song is amazingly well written, the song Mama oozes Queen influence as well as dark cabaret. This is a very inspired album with so many far reaching influences and a great story. It shames me even today people are quick to write ... read more

One of the first tech-death albums I ever listened to at about 16 years old i wanna say? 6 years have passed since then and it doesn't quite hold up as well as I remember having listened to more tech death since then. However Spheres of Madness is still nutty as fuck. Still a good album, but not as great as i remember it being.

Highlight(s): Spheres of Madness, Nihility (Anti-Human Manifesto), Perfect Dehumanisation, Mother War
