Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
96

deeply heartfelt and emotive, a lesson in lyricism. the writing is beautifully imagistic and wholistic, remaining striking and sincere while naming a track after warhammer 40k race and a famously speedy plane.
isaac has a unique skill in weaving abstract and grandiose imagery with the mundane, the metaphysical and even prophetic “I’ll bury the hatchet/ Between the window and the kingdom of men” giving way to the domestic “chicken” and “broccoli” of ... read more

black midi - Cavalcade

lusciously maximalist and brutally visceral, this album demonstrates an unbelievable range of sound and feeling, all in the most joyful manner possible.

KSI - Dissimulation
35

KSI's youtube videos have always been a guilty pleasure of mine, and I was excited for this album if only to watch him progress. While it is unquestionably better than New Age, it just simply not good.

It has been said countless times that KSI is carried by his features, and while sometimes he can contribute positively, such as in 'Down Like that' and 'Poppin', he was consistently overshadowed by the bigger names on the tracks. The solo tracks were very forgettable, with lyrics which were ... read more

YUNGBLUD - 21st Century Liability
65

The imagery in this album is less subtle than a clown in a holocaust museum. It screams "I am a punk, I hate the system" so violently that his vocal chords may just explode. Having said that, the album is fun and to be honest an enjoyable listen and "Polygraph Eyes" is actually very good. I think it is over hated because it is so easy to ridicule.

Although devoid of any self awareness, it's fun and unique and that's about all you can ask for.

Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters
98

This album has received an insane amount of praise since its release and it is wholly deserved. The vocal talent is on full display with such diverse tone and intonation, at some points seeming theatrical and some feeling intimate with spoken word or whispered segments.

The range of vocals is something I don't think I have ever heard before and the beats and melodies in the background are just as varied and imaginative. This album really is unique in every sense of the word and it revels in ... read more

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Fishing for Fishies
82

Very refreshing psych/bluesy rock. The environmental message is relevant and delivered well without being overly obnoxious (which it so easily could have been). Some extremely fun tracks, especially with the electronic cyboogie at the end. The fact that a track is even named cyboogie is amazing to me, and the song perfectly matches the name.

The sound was consistently well produced with clean guitar and drums, a very enjoyable listen. It is very clear how much imagination was pumped into this ... read more

Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
88

This album is a testament to Knopfler's skill as a musician. The guitar is consistently powerful throughout with memorable riffs in almost every track. The lyricism in certain tracks is also powerful with interesting social commentary which is somewhat unique for rock music of the mid 80s.

For me the album is characterised by its three biggest hits, "Money for Nothing", "Walk of Life" and "Brothers in Arms" which all share Dire Straits' consistently fantastic ... read more

Billy Joel - The Stranger
94

This album is everything a singer-songwriter album should be and more. The heights that Billy Joel hits on this album are astonishing, and his sincerity and lyricism contribute to this greatly. I went in to this album knowing Joel for hits such as "We didn't start the fire" and "Uptown Girl" and I was not expecting much, but after now repeatedly listening to this album, to say I have been blown away would be a gross understatement.

Love is handled with a fantastic maturity ... read more

Lil Uzi Vert - Eternal Atake
45

While his earlier work left me incredibly impressed, this left me incredibly bored.
The beats sound like something out of 5-10 years ago, I was expecting a lot more from an artist I had previously held in high regards. He does not attempt anything out of the ordinary and places himself into inoffensive blandness, which is the worst place to be.

AC/DC - Back in Black
85

After Bon Scott's death, Brian Johnson had giant shoes to fill, and this comeback album is a tribute to just how well he did. This album is pure hard rock and roll, and benefits from its simple hooks but hard hitting vocals. It suffers from the same thing all AC/DC's songs do, a complete lack of complexity in any way, shape or form but if you listen to this album with expectations of some hard rock, you will not be disappointed.

Kicking off with Hell's Bells, one of the most underrated tracks ... read more

Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare
92

My favourite Arctic Monkeys Album, just edging out their debut. It perfectly showcases Alex Turner's unique perspective and voice, with lyricism being consistently great and vocals showing his immense range, from the explosive "Teddy Picker" to the melancholy and dream like "505" which is in my opinion are Arctic Monkeys two best tracks and the fact that they are both contained in the same album, while feeling widely diverging in sentiment is a service to this album's ... read more

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
96

Everything I had heard about this album was true. It was a joy to listen to from front to back. From the ethereal and trance-inducing "Dreams" to the uplifting "Go Your Own Way", this album delivers everything you could ask of Pop Rock and more.

Rumours handles each theme addressed with a thoughtful, but ultimately uplifting outlook and I believe this is where it gains its appeal. Where most bands would use a breakup to produce a moody and melancholy album, Fleetwod Mac ... read more
