AFX - Analogue Bubblebath
79

A very good start to an amazing career. I'm absolutely in love with the creative and excellently crafted title track. It really carries this EP although I think the other darker tracks still have cool ideas, intriguing atmospheres, and satisfying payoffs. Really, the only weakpoint is AFX 2, which is incredibly annoying. The age of this EP can't be ignored as well but it doesn't hurt my enjoyment that much. I wouldn't call this great, but it has its place in electronic music history as Aphex ... read more

Aphex Twin - AnalogBubblebath Vol.2

Sound-wise, Aphex Twin's 2nd ever release is very different. A lot darker, simplistic, and repetitive. 1 similarity it does have though is that the 1st track, actually named Digeridoo, carries the whole thing so much. It's another creative flex by Richard and perfectly accomplishes what it was going for. A lot of work went into it as well which is funny as the other 2 sound like they were made in a day. While more time in the oven would have greatly benefitted the sloppy track 3 (also known as ... read more

AFX - Smojphace EP

Smojphace is a weird obscure EP. I feel bad for giving it a rating this low though because the first track is great. This remix of Run the Place Red by The Bug and Daddy Freddy is fun, fast, and incredibly unique even by Aphex Twin standards. Like he's never made something this close to breakcore before and it's far better than the original. However, the derailing into harsh noise at the end marks an unfortunate turning point in this EP. The next 11 minutes are nothing but harsh ... read more

Aphex Twin - London 14.09.2019

This EP is incredibly underrated. A kinda-sorta companion piece to Orphans, London 14.09.2019 is a concert exclusive EP that recycles 3 tracks off of Orphans. However, that alternate remix of Luke Vibert - Spiral Staircase was replaced with a new track called Soundlab20 and it is amazing. It has a great balance of retro aesthetics and the vibrant sound heard on stuff like Syro, making for a fun track with a satisfying progression through various summery soundscapes. Its 2nd half is perfection ... read more

AFX - Orphans

Quite the amazing EP! It has 2 awesome highlights from the soundcloud dump: Spiral Staircase and Nightmail. Spiral Staircase has an interesting history, being a track Richard snuck into a Luke Vibert remix contest. While it was made to specifically cater to Luke's tastes, it's also an amazingly well constructed song with a lot of emotion. Nightmail on the other hand is just straight up fun. It sees Richard trade energetic improvisations with himself over an old sample of a poem ... read more
