JPEGMAFIA - EXPERIMENTAL RAP
NR

There's nothing left to JPEG but his own flanderization, leaning so heavily into his genre label that he's named the entire album after it while spewing ragebait like "Free Derek Chauvin" over bland "sound design" noises you'd find from a generic Dubstep producer on YouTube before cutting away to an empty acoustic guitar riff that does nothing to earn its own breakaway. Anger, in my opinion, is the easiest emotion to elicit, and this is a fact that JPEGMAFIA ... read more

Lil Ugly Mane - Oblivion Access
NR

Travis Miller's most transient release in his discography is one I remember hearing described as the bleakest, of course before Miller debuted Bedwetter. Still, inter-discographic comparison is pretty pointless, and the focal point of Oblivion Access is undoubtably the near-contradictory set of palettes that wrap around the purely wrathful, to one's self and one's world, lyricism. Miller is downright hateful, all over this entire record, and it makes these strange warm moments, ... read more

JPEGMAFIA - babygirl
NR

Album rollout singles work best when they give you this horrendous, lingering dread that the worst album of the year is imminent. Giving premptive congrats to JPEGMAFIA for holding that title again. More seriously, Peggy has been on a continual downward spiral of self parody; another obnoxiously-frontal, repetitive vocal sample driven beat with heavy tube-compressed and sidechained drums. The eidolon spectre of everything wrong with his past three records, and we haven't even gotten to his ... read more

North West - N0rth4evr
NR

Lots are poising the discussion of this record around the fact that a 12-year old produced this, when the proper framing right now should be Rage Rap has become so trite and diluted-by-and-within-itself that the bar of production competency has reached literal children. Ignore the fact her dad probably had her exposed to a DAW before double digits. This is my anti-Rage rhetoric and I will frame it how I want. Drop a like if Playboi Carti should take his own life ASAP!

ISIS - The Red Sea
NR

ISIS' The Red Sea is the most furious the band has ever been, Turner manically screaming, howling, thrashing over enormous freight-train riffs, so gargantuan they drown his presence and interlock into a maelstrom of weight and intensity. Kicking off with an industrial, desolate Noise Rock opener, the band then swiftly slams the gas into quintessential Sludge Metal, building more fury and heftiness than, frankly, I think the genre had seen prior to this as it started to comfortably exit the ... read more
