RELISTEN:

I take back what i said.. This album is great..

OLD REVIEW:

You know. I tried to like it.

My first listen was terrible but my second listen wasn't the worst. It's just boring in my opinion.

Most of the songs are just off putting and just weird.

I'm not a fan of Ween's quirkiness, really puts the album down for me.

Of course some songs were good like "It's Gonna Be a Long Night" and "So many people in the Neighborhood" (only the first minute of that song.)

But nothing else really does it for me.

I can't believe this is album is highly rated. What is appealing about this? It's just very off putting and weird to me.

At least they aren't the type to make 8 minute long songs, that's the only credit I can really give this album.

Oh. Don't get me started on track 7. "Happy Colored Marbles" This sounds like It would be on a cocomelon video instead of a damn rock record. I actually cannot stand this track.

The Fucked Jam only serves to prove my point as well. Just nonsense in my ears the whole time. They are really trying too hard with this quirky soundscape.

@Jegtor Hmm.. You think I should take another listen to it? Maybe i took the wrong approach to this album, the story is actually pretty interesting, at least, the part you told me. If you know anymore I would be glad to hear it ^^

@Xploder you could do your own research/interpretation of the songs and their lyrics, personally i try to really see what the original artist's intentions were. i think genius annotations also have some contextualization for the what and whys of each of the album's tracks so you could look for that too

The Mollusk and White Pepper are two other great and accessible ween records if you wanna get into them btw. i'd recommend the pod due to it's symbolic similarities to quebec but that one is a lot more of an acquired taste, unless you wanna hear more like "the fucked jam"

@Jegtor I do NOT wanna hear more of the fucked jam but ill check out those records

@Xploder fun fact about that one. (from what i've heard) the main motive for white pepper being created was that so maybe they could extend the contract with their label longer by making a hit, and that's why it sounds so apart from anything else they've made

so i like to think that they went "hey here's a strangely normal record coming from us, yeah we can just do that" as to show how skilled they really are

@Xploder it is only the natural progression of things. you have now become one with the brown.
i suggest you watch the entire live in chicago show on youtube. i've discovered it's the best thing for getting someone into ween and to understand them. it's also just a great fucking performance and if i could travel to any place from any time that show is unironically in my top 10 (the album version of live in chicago is shortened so doing it on youtube is better. and also more fun. i made a whole concert in my room with that video)

they're also notorious for having b-sides and unreleased content that are straight up better sometimes than normal releases. "The Mollusk Sessions" and "Caesar Demos" (they're in the "miscellaneous" section of ween's aoty page. caesar is basically outtakes from quebec) are fantastic shows of their talent, because at the end it leaves you wondering how they could leave out all those things. imo, i like the demo version of if you could save yourself better than the final. there's just so much more raw emotion
