The twin influences on 'False Start' are Hendrix (who guest features on the opener) and funk - a combination that really makes Love sound like a totally new band this time.

This in itself might not be the worst thing, only the distinct personality of Lee's past song writing is jettisoned and replaced with some very standard genre pastiches and copycat 'rock moves'.

While being a decent release, it only depicts more of the band falling apart as Lee struggles to hold a lineup together. The end result is a very muddled and all of the place release which never sets a consistent tone. At first I thought all the songs were going to segue like The Beatles' "the long one" but that idea was dropped after only 2 songs; Decisions like these plague the album where they set up interesting ideas and then just don't see them through. Honestly not that bad. They give hard rock a go and do a decent enough job at it.
