Azizam does its job with the kind of ruthless efficiency you might expect from Sheeran in unabashed pop mode. It has a hook that fully digs into your brain the first time you hear it, and proves impossible to dislodge thereafter: whether you consider that delightful or insufferable will depend entirely on your previously established opinion of Sheeran and his work.

For all its infectiously up-tempo rhythm, sweetly phrased singing, sleek bouncy bass and a cute interplay between zesty acoustic guitars and a high, twisty, electronically treated, vaguely eastern earworm hook, it is so vapid, lightweight and enthusiastically banal my brain just bounces off it.

I have to admit, even though Azizam is another polished, formulaic, radio-tailored anthem, Ed’s definitely put out worse in his career. The production is pretty generic, but it’s clean. But the melody and chorus are catchy though—I’ll give him that. Lyrically, it’s far from his best, but honestly, it’s one of the more listenable tracks he’s dropped in a while. And that says something.
