Lantern

For those familiar with the music of Clogs, Lantern won't sound like much of a departure, but a definite improvement. The nuance of piano, the swelling strings that exercise restraint, the welling and wheeze of a crescendo — it all delivers.

There are no standout tracks, this is an album to be heard in its entirety as it builds from melancholic to inspiring, jaunts through playful then finally trails off to weary satisfaction.

The 'contemporary classical' tag doesn't do justice to their cinematic, intense instrumental narratives.

They capture and transform generic ideas about space and environment in ways beyond the grasp of most bands. Sadly, this approach limits their accessibility; even so, theirs is a world well worth, at least, a visit.

Their music is exquisite; it rocks, saws and sings its way into your heart.

It may never fly in the conservatory, but the music of Clogs is sure to make the bar set feel a little more cultured.
