Grief is one of the hardest feelings to put into words, let alone experience. Yet, on Bug Teeth’s debut album, Micrographia, this incomprehensible puzzle of emotions is gently pieced together by a mixture of haunting ambience, textured synths, and the unmistakable lilt of PJ Johnson’s otherworldly voice, sometimes innocent and breathy, other times harnessing pure pain.
Bug Teeth’s Micrographia finds cosmic resonance in quiet moments.
Bug Teeth – *Micrographia*
The voice is fragile in the most beautiful way, carrying a delicate emotional weight without ever straining for effect. The slow beats and soft production create a gentle waking state, which made this album feel unexpectedly healing this morning. The textures are rich and carefully assembled, shifting from warm to slightly noisy, especially on “Amonnite,” which raised my excitement for the rest of the record.

The bass in this album fucking slaps. I do have to say it's a bit too sparse and meandering for my taste, but when it hits, it really hits, especially in the second half which leans more into the dream pop side of things instead of this electronic art pop sound it had going on in the first half. 'Warp & Weft II' just took me back to 2010's dream pop and is ear candy for sure. Definitely one of the best tracks of the album. I think this will grow on me but we'll see.
Beautiful vocals, nice atmosphere, decent instrumental and ok lyrics.
Not to long and not to short and they have alot of room to improve
interesting production at many points and great singing from the vocalist but my god does it get boring at times.
I think Bug Teeth are in a league of their own here. Their music is truly singular and I love the use of abstraction mixed with infectious microbeats and great hooks. I think this record went very under appreciated this year, the instrumentation is insanely consistent and every pocket of the mix is just so gloriously detailed. Love it.
