As a whole, Cities shows Anberlin coming to a crossroads between youth and maturity and creating an absolute masterpiece of both.
Cities is one of the albums that I just couldn't put down and leave for nearly 3 years now. It got me through a couple of my middle school years, and now it's helping me get through high school. This is easily my favorite Anberlin record due to its amazing production quality, instrumentation that never misses a beat, Stephens great singing/song-writing, and none of the tracks have gotten old even after these 3 years. In Cities, we see an unbelievable jump in maturity and quality. This is where Anberlin hit a sweet spot. They carved out a distinct sound, and the song-writing and tension building characteristics of their music improved much. Instead of hearing an immature "From Under the Corktree" influenced record, you hear Anberlin. This is their record that is distinctly Anberlin.

Cities is THE Anberlin record. It’s the one that has been heralded as an alt-rock classic and one of the best albums of the 00s. I have always loved it but I’ve also hesitated to call it a masterpiece and that's mainly because of a lull in its middle section ("Hello Alone" through "Reclusion").
